Ils diront : « Merle signe cela donc, il est communiste. » Qd j'ai protesté contre l'arrestation de Duclos [le dirigeant communiste Jacques Duclos en 1952], c'est comme si, aux yeux des Rennais, une tache de lèpre était soudain apparue sur mon visage. Ils se sont dits « on s'en doutait déjà. Mais maintenant, ça y est ! On n'en est sûr ! » Après cela, le Président des radicaux a dit au cours d'un banquet : « Merle est communiste ». Un de mes amis présents est intervenu : « Je le connais bien, et je vous assure que non ». « Alors, a dit le président, alors, c'est un enfant !" Plus tard en novembre 1952, il se rendit à Vienne, pour le Congrès mondial de la paix du Mouvement de la paix. Sartre et Robert Merle s'étaient rencontrés, dès octobre 1937, au lycée Pasteur de Neuilly. Ecrivain, prix Goncourt (1949).
