Ils diront : « Merle signe cela donc, il est communiste. » Qd j'ai protesté contre l'arrestation de Duclos [le dirigeant communiste Jacques Duclos en 1952], c'est comme si, aux yeux des Rennais, une tache de lèpre était soudain apparue sur mon visage. Ils se sont dits « on s'en doutait déjà. Mais maintenant, ça y est ! On n'en est sûr ! » Après cela, le Président des radicaux a dit au cours d'un banquet : « Merle est communiste ». Un de mes amis présents est intervenu : « Je le connais bien, et je vous assure que non ». « Alors, a dit le président, alors, c'est un enfant !" Les adultes, il va sans dire, ne m'intimident pas, et je continuerai à signer Etc. Etc. Mais sur le plan de l'efficacité, je trouve qu'il faudrait un autre truc que le Mouvement de la Paix que ses attaches et son origine rendent suspect au public. E, 1952, Jean-Paul Sartre prit position pour la libération d'Henri Martin. Il signa une demande en grâce au Président de la République Vincent Auriol. Plus tard en novembre 1952, il se rendit à Vienne, pour le Congrès mondial de la paix du Mouvement de la paix. Sartre et Robert Merle s'étaient rencontrés, dès octobre 1937, au lycée Pasteur de Neuilly. Ecrivain, prix Goncourt (1949).
