Paperback. Condition: Good. Why has there been so much interest in "surplus value" in recent years? In"The Outside Can't Go Outside", artist Merlin Carpenter considers how this term has been inserted into contemporary art theory following the financial crisis of 2007/8. The book focuses on the idea that the value of art is located in unpaid mental, educational, and communicational labor that is gradually accrued and then exploited according to the logic of Marx's central thesis on exploitation. This much-hyped view is rejected in favor of a more rigorous Marxist interpretation of the nature of surplus value, and its role in a systematic law of value. Carpenter counterposes value to what exists outside of it-a dream, an imaginary, what he describes as a "trance" or the location of revolutionary thought and desires. The outside, however, is not proposed as a physical location, but as an outside inside the body that functions as a line of control within. Moreover, the author suggests that the new revolutionary subjects might be the new groups that form in order to push against control networks, in a reordering of class struggles. Institut f r Kunstkritik Series.

paperback. Condition: Acceptable. Please see the condition note after this for details, if this is missing please consider Acceptable to mean poor quality that could include major staining, water damage, writing, missing dustjacket, etc etc. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Paperback. Condition: New. London-based artist Merlin Carpenter is probably one of the few artists who posts on his own website negative reviews of his work from various newspapers and magazines. Rather audacious, but the posturing fits in with his series of exhibitions, called The Opening, that lampoons the conventions of the contemporary art world. All paintings at each version of The Opening are actually painted onsite, some proclaiming sentiments like Die collector scum. With essays by critic Caroline Busta and art historian George Baker, the book is a catalog-like compilation of installation photos and reproductions from several years of various Openings, including gallery invitations announcing Carpenter s irreverent, politically charged action paintings.

19 x 19cm. Paperback, various paginations [approx 40pp]. A clutch of pamphlets with pulled stitching, bound loosely together. Curious conceptual illustrated pamphlets disguised as corporate fluff, published to coincide with an exhibition held at Galerie Bleich-Rossi, Vienna, from January 25th to March 10th 2007. Each pamphlet subverts the format of major gallery ephemera: ?the 'Art Supporters' pamphlet suggests a list of patrons, but actually showcases various models of art easel; the bi-fold Mercedes-Benz brochure advertises bicycles; the main pamphlet bears the fake title 'English Medieval Sculpture'. Stitching is loose, and edge of the spurious Mercedes-Benz brochure is creased. Fair condition.
