When the Research reported here was undertaken, the difficulties of evaluative research in the social welfare setting were already well recognized. Evaluation in mental health, in particular, had been subject to extensive review,1 and the general principles of scientific evaluation had been widely dis-cussed.2 There was not available, however, a comparable fund of reported experiences of evaluative studies carried out in social welfare settings according to a control group design. This report of research conducted at Altro Health and Rehabilitation Services, Ine., with the support of Russell Sage Foundation, is designed to contribute to such a fund of knowledge. The paucity of careful evaluation studies undoubtedly re-fiects awareness by both social scientists and social practition-ers of the problems involved. Despite understandable hesita-tions, there can be no alternative to facing these problems and conducting rigorous research. Difficulties should be recognized in order that they may be overcome. Improvement in practice is expected whenever scientific methodology is employed in pursuit of the goals of practitioners. The helping professions must ultimately follow the model of the older professions, such as medicine, and encourage rather than resist objective assessments of their activities. Social seientists who engage in evalua-tive research are, in turn, obligated to respect the valued goals of the agencies and programs they evaluate and to acknowl-edge the good faith and sincerity of practitioners. The research carried out at Altro proposed to evaluate the program for the rehabilitation of post-hospitalized mental pa-tients. From the point of view of fully achieving the objectives of evaluative research, the project was not wholly successful. Nevertheless, two useful types of knowledge were developed and these constitute the subject matter that follows. The first is the experience of conducting the evaluative research, with a faithful record of problems encountered. Ghapters 1,2, and 3 teil this story. The second type of useful knowledge is the analysis of the data collected in the course of the research. This is presented in chapters 4, 5, and 6. The former may be useful to others undertaking evaluative research. The latter con-tributes more generally to knowledge about mental patients, their backgrounds, and the factors associated with their re-maining in the Community or being rehospitalized.
