"München folgt als zweite Stadt in Deutschland mit einer selbständigen Abteilung für Haut- und Geschlechtskrankheiten. Nachdem die Universität jahrhundertelang in Ingolstadt ihr Domizil hatte, seit 1800 dann für wenige Jahrzehnte in Landshut lehrte, siedelte sie 1829 nach der bayrischen Landeshauptstadt München über, wo sie die Räumlichkeiten des 1813 neu erbauten Allgemeinen Krankenhauses übernehmen konnte. Der Zeit entsprechend gab es nur 2 Teile, die Medizinische und die Chirurgische Klinik. Ebenso zeittypisch wurden die "Syphilitischen" in der Chirurgischen und die "Krätzigen" in der Medizinischen Klinik untergebracht. Schließlich war diese Lösung doch unbefriedigend, weshalb 1831 eine eigene, sog. "III." oder"Syphilitische Abteilung und Klinik" gebildet wurde. Die Leitung wurde dem Oberarzt Johann Narr übertragen, der auch einen Lehrauftrag für "Syphilitische und Hautkrankheiten" erhielt. 2 Jahre später, im Jahre 1833, wechselte die Leitung der Abteilung in die Hände von Franz Horner, der der Klinik zwar 26 Jahre als Direktor vorstand, jedoch wissenschaftlich nichts bewegte. Horner, der parallel außerdem Krankenhausdirektor gewesen ist, wurde in besonderer und nicht aufgeklärter Weise von der Universität gestützt, obwohl der Magistrat der Stadt ihn gern wegen "Notorischer Funktionsunfähigkeit" und "Energielosigkeit" entlassen hätte. Mit dem Jahr 1853 kam der entscheidende Wechselin der Münchner Klinik, denn mit der Übernahme der Leitung durch Josef Lindwurm (1824-1874) kam ein klinisch und wissenschaftlich aktiver Arzt auf diese Position, der in den 10 Jahren seines Direktorates vorbildliche Aktivitäten initiierte (Abb. 11). Der in Wien Paris und Dublin ausgebildete Lindwurm brachte die Anregungen der modernen Syphilisforschung nach München, die er hier selbst auch umsetzte. Er bekannte sich wie der Franzose Philipp Ricord (1800-1889) aufgrund von Impfversuchen zu der Dualitätslehre in der Venerologie, also der Unterscheidung von Syphilis, Gonorrhö und Ulcus molle. Außerdem bekannte er sich aufgrund seiner Versuchsergebnisse zur Infektiosität der sekundären Syphilis. Die Krönung dieses Lebensweges war, daß mit der Ernennung von Josef Lindwurm 1863 die erste deutsche Universität einen Lehrstuhl für Dermatologie und Syphilodologie erhielt (Abb. 12). Es blieb für Jahrzehnte ein solitäres Ereignis, denn mit dem Wechsel von Lindwurm auf das Direktorat der Medizinischen Klinik im Jahr 1869 wurde die ordentliche Professur nicht auf den Amtsnachfolger Karl Posselt (1837-1916) übertragen."
