Gabriel de Mortillet Il est maire de Saint-Germain-en-Laye de 1882 à 1888 et député de Seine-et-Oise de 1885 à 1889. Son frère aîné, Paul de Mortillet est botaniste. Il introduisit le kaki japonais en France. Dans sa jeunesse, l'archéologue et anthropologie isérois suivit une formation jésuite, laquelle affecta ce dernier au point de susciter en lui une base idéologique particulièrement anti-cléricale1. Il étudie à Chambéry puis à Paris1. Il entreprend très tôt des actions de militantisme au travers, notamment, de feuillets au sein du journal d'opposition au régime républicain de Napoléon III, la Revue indépendanteN 1 ; ainsi que la rédaction de plusieurs articles dans les pages de d'autres hebdomadaires et dont la connotation politique était marquée d'un socialisme confirmé. L'action partisane de Gabriel de Mortillet dans la Révolution de 1848 en faveur du camp socialiste, lui valut d'être condamné à l'exil en 1849, alors que l'état français était sous la présidence de Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte. Il se réfugie en Suisse. En 1856, ses compétences en tant qu'ingénieur et géologue sont requises en Italie et Mortillet entreprend, aux côtés d'une équipe de maître d'oeuvre, la réalisation de la voie de chemin de fer raccordant la région de Lombardie à celle de Vénétie. Demeurant alors à Peschiera del Garda, l'archéologue participe à l'exploration des lacs lombards et met au jour le premier site néolithique italien à Isolino, près du lac Majeur, dans la province italienne de Varèse, en 1863. En 1864, il crée une nouvelle revue, les Matériaux pour l'histoire positive et philosophique de l'homme, qui deviendra Matériaux pour l'histoire naturelle et primitive de l'homme et publia en France la plupart des premières publications consacrées à la Préhistoire. En 1865-66, il participe à la création des Congrès internationaux d'anthropologie et d'archéologie préhistoriques. En 1867, il organise la section préhistorique de l'exposition L'histoire du travail dans le cadre de l'Exposition universelle de Paris. Il devient successivement attaché aux musées d'Annecy et de Genève, puis en 1868, sur la recommandation d'Édouard Lartet, il devient attaché à la conservation du nouveau musée des Antiquités nationales situé à Saint-Germain-en-Laye, dont il sera ultérieurement promu vice-conservateur général4,6. Il est chargé d'y classer et d'établir des typologies culturelles ainsi que des sériations chronologiques datant de l'âge de l'âge de pierre, à partir de matériaux muséographiques considérablement enrichis en 1865 par le don des collections de Boucher de Perthes. Un conflit durable l'opposera au conservateur, l'helléniste Alexandre Bertrand. Pour Gabriel de Mortillet, l'une de ses principales sources d'intérêt dans le domaine de l'archéologie, ont eu pour objet les découvertes du début du xixe siècle faites par l'abbé Giovanni Baptista Giani concernant culture de Golasecca, un faciès archéologique attribué à des populations celto-italiennes du 1er et du 2e âge du fer et se localisant au sein d'un territoire affectant la Lombardie, et une partie de la région nord-italiote du Piémont et du Sud du Tessin suisse,7,8. Bien que moins présent sur place que son homologue Alexandre Bertrand, le scientifique isérois effectue quelques voyages à pied d'oeuvre au sein des sites archéologiques nord-italiens. Celui-ci en ramène une substantielle partie de la collection de l'abbé Giani pour le musée des Antiquités nationales et contribue à l'élaboration d'une chronologie plus approfondie de la civilisation de Golasecca. Il publie en 1865 une monographie répertoriant l'ensemble des rapports archéologiques réalisés sur ce propos depuis 1824 et réunissant la totalité de ses propres analyses.
