Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of The Perse School in Cambridge from its humble beginnings as a small, poorly funded institution to a renowned center of learning that has shaped countless lives over several centuries. The school was the brainchild of Dr. Stephen Perse, a successful physicia…n who had a deep concern for the welfare of his community. Perse believed that education was the key to a better life, and he was determined to provide opportunities for the underprivileged children of Cambridge. The book traces the school's history from its inception in 1615 through various challenges and triumphs. It sheds light on the school's educational philosophy and curriculum, which emphasized the classics and aimed to produce well-rounded individuals who were prepared for university study or a career in business or the professions. The book also discusses the school's relationship with the University of Cambridge and the wider community. The Perse School has played a significant role in the intellectual and cultural life of Cambridge for over four centuries, and its story offers valuable insights into the evolution of education in England. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Contemporary or near contemporary stamped vellum, edges speckled red, front hinge cracked but just holding, foxing to prelims, final leaves and near the plates, otherwise good. Bookplate of N. Herschel?s Observations on a comet (pages 151-153) continues the acknowledgement of his sister?s contribution to scientific discovery, one of the very earliest women whose work was recognised. Sir, The last time I was in town, you expressed a wish to see my observations on the comet which my sister Caroline Herschel discovered in the evening of the 21st of last December?(page 151).

The collection is in very good condition, with a few staple and pin holes. Gray's letters are signed 'Milner Gray' and occasionally 'Milner'. All but the first two, which are on Society of Industrial Artists letterheads, are on Design Research Unit letterheads. An early letter (5 April 1949), to Kenneth Luckhurst, Secretary, Roy…al Society of Arts, apologises for and explains a 'difficulty' which has arisen 'over the fees we estimated for completing the necessary working drawings and supervising construction of the permanent display screens for the Society's headquarters'. The rest of the correspondence makes clear Gray's role as an active member of the Society.
