A very good miniature Almanack in the original crimson morocco wrap-round (wallet style) binding. 6.3cm x 3.6cm x 0.4cm. All page edges gilt [32pp.] VG. ** "David Bogue started life on 16 October 1808 in East Lothian as the son of Jacob Bogue, a farmer, and Ann Johnston. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Biography, he became the assistant of Thomas Ireland, a bookseller in Edinburgh, but moved to London in 1836 to work for Charles Tilt. Tilt had his shop at 86 Fleet Street and specialised in illustrated books and lithographic prints. The 1851 census found the Bogue family at 76 Camden Road. The census papers for 86 Fleet Street tell us that "no person sleeps on premises". David died in November 1856 of heart disease, aged just 48.(2) His name still appeared in the tax records and in imprints in 1857 and 1858 as the executors tried to keep the place going with the help of Charles Tilt, but by 1859, most of Bogue's copyrights and stock, as well as the shop, had been taken over by William Kent (his name is listed in the Land Tax records for 1860)." - See David Bogue, bookseller and publisher, by Baldwin Hamey, 2017.…

The "Almanack Explained" page lists the year as Dominical Letter "C," Golden Number "18," and Cycle of the Sun "2." 1841 is the only year within the reign of Queen Victoria that correlates with all these points. The Victoria Miniature Almanack, featuring a detailed calendar, regal table, and list of bank transfer dates, likely from the year 1841. (illustrator).…

Rare remarkable "pocket" London almanack; an entirely engraved miniature publication for the year 1788. The almanac contains an explanation of its use on the title page, four full-page portraits of the King of Prussia, the Prince of Orange, the Duke of Brunswick, and the Duke of York, common notes (including the dominical letters, golden number, and religious festive days) for 1788 beneath a half-page view of St. Paul's Cathedral, a calendar, an overview of all British Kings and Queens and the dates of their reign, a list of mayors and sheriffs (1767-1788), one page listing bank holidays, and an overview of the Royal family (King George III and Queen Charlotte and their children) can be found on the final page. The long series of the London Almanack is, according to Bondy, of special interest for the beautiful bindings which were issued or commissioned by the publishers themselves. The binding shows signs of wear, with some minor loss of material around the foot of the spine and a small worm hole in the fore edge of the back board. The final page shows a light red stain, slightly affecting the text. Lacking its matching decorative slipcase. Otherwise in very good condition.l Bondy p. 39 ff., and p. 164; Welsh p. 32 and passim; Coll. Arthur A. Houghton Jr., 194; this ed. not in WorldCat. Contemporary elaborately gold-tooled red morocco, the gold-tooled boards are beautifully decorated with a white morocco trellis-like (mosaic) pattern with red and green lozenge shaped morocco inlays, gilt edges, marbled endpapers. With an engraved armorial title page, 4 full-page engraved portraits of the King of Prussia, the Prince of Orange, the Duke of Brunswick, and the Duke of York, and a half-page engraved view of St. Paul's Cathedral.
