Of all the ancient monuments in India, the Rock-cut caves near Ajanta have won a unique place by virtue of their having the most perfect specimens of Indian mural paintings. The spine is still fairly tight but some loosening is apparent opposite the content page and exterior along the spine. There is wear at the tail of the spine and at a place near the bottom of the back cover. No apparent markings or writings in the book itself. A rather comprehensive description and interpretation of the thirty caves, including the unfinished ones. An interesting read for those contemplating leisure travel to India. Written by Debala Mitra, the former Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, this scholarly monograph provides the definitive catalogue and analysis of the celebrated hoard of bronze sculptures discovered at Jhewari in the Chittagong District (now Bangladesh). Uncovered in 1927, this cache of over 60 votive images and miniature stupas represents a crucial chapter in the history of East Indian art, bridging the stylistic gap between the Pala-Sena schools of Bengal and the art of Pagan (Myanmar). Mitra offers a meticulous iconographic study of the collection, which dates primarily from the 9th to the 11th centuries A.D.
