Hardcover. Condition: vg to vg+. Third French edition. Sextodecimo (5 1/2 x 3 1/2"). (48) 188 (4), 166, 12pp. Original full vellum with gilt lettering and ruling on brown leather label on the spine. Additional engraved title page. Publisher's device on title page. Decorative head and tailpieces. Decorative initials. Contains catalog of books by Adrian Moetjens. Title translation: "Ceremonies and customs which are observed today among the Jews and translated from the Italian of Leon de Modena; with a supplement concerning the sects of the Karaites and the Samaritans of our time. Third edition revised, corrected & augmented by a second part entitled 'Comparison of the ceremonies of the Jews and of the discipline of the Church: with a discourse concerning the various masses, or liturgies which are in use in all the world', by the Sieur de Simonville." Early publication of the scholar Richard Simon containing his French translation of "Historia degli riti hebraici" by Rabbi Leon of Modena (1574 - 1654, Yehudah Aryeh Mi-Modena). An important source for the history of European Judaism. Modena's work was originally published in Italian, first in Paris in 1637, and then in Venice in 1638. Both of these editions included Modena's supplement on the heretical Jewish sects, the Karaites and the Samaritans, as well as several other chapters on divinations and spells. The book was significant in that was the first work of the modern era aimed at non-Jewish readers, to educate them on Jewish religious practice and customs. It was quite popular in the period went through numerous internationally translated editions. Simon's French edition of the work was first issued in 1674, including the supplement by Modena. In 1681 he issued both the second edition of his translation, to which was added his work on comparative religion ("Comparaison des Ceremonies des Juifs"), and that work published separately. It suffices to recall that the work allowed, among other things, the rediscovery of the East and of non-Christian religions through an almost ethnographic vision which objectively described Judaism independently of the religious prejudices of the 17th century, thus inaugurating what will make all the vocation of the great Oratorian. Table of contents a the rear. The final page contains an advertisement for the publisher at the bottom. Decorative bookplate of French author and economist André Morellet (1727 1819), pasted on the interior front cover. Binding with minor rubbing to covers and extremities. Brown label on the spine lightly chipped along the edges. Minor sporadic water stains and/ or foxing to a few pages throughout. P.23 torn along the side margin, with no loss of text. Binding and interior both in very good to very good+ condition overall.

Reference: Roest 667. All edges dyed pink. The author, Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh of Modena (April 23, 1571 Venice - March 21, 1648 Venice) was a rabbi, preacher, writer, poet and proofreader. His parents came from the city of Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. He was a child prodigy. At age two and a half he recited the haftara in the local synagogue. At age 3 he could translate passages from the Torah into Italian. He developed an interest in Italian literature, music, acting and dancing. At the age of nineteen he married his cousin, Rachel. Most of his life was spent in great suffering: he was addicted to gambling and lost all his money, of his three sons one died, the second was murdered, and the third went to Brazil and returned only after his father's death. His wife Rachel fell ill with a serious mental illness. He was a student of Rabbi Shmuel Yehuda Katznelbogen and of Rabbi Shmuel ben Elhanan Ya'akov Arcivolti, At age 23 he was appointed a dayan and preacher in Venice and also served as the head of the General Yeshiva of Venice. He was known as an excellent preacher Gentiles also listened to his sermons. He was engaged in teaching for many years, and with his many students there were also Christians. One of his prominent students was Rabbi Shaul Levi Mortera, later the rabbi of the community and rabbi in Amsterdam. Besides Modena's occupations in the fields of Judaism, he also engaged in liberal professions, and was the director of a theater and music academy in the ghetto of Venice. At age 13 (according to his own testimony) he wrote the book being offered here: an amusing anti-gambling essay entitled Sur Mera ("avoid evil" a phrase in pirkey avot), which presents a dialogue in Halacha, thought, literature and gossip between two friends - Eldad and Midad: one often gambles, while the other tries to dissuade him from doing so. In this composition, de Modena's playful writing is revealed, which will accompany him throughout his writing. He often engaged in polemics with Christians. 4, p. 304. Calimani, "Storia del ghetto di Venezia", 2016). ITA.

With brownspotting and signs of use throughout. Small tears to some blank margins. Two leaves more worn to the lower margin, just touching one engraving and a line of text, resulting in very minor loss. Titl-page within woodcut printed border. Illustrated throughout with 14 large (7,7 x 11,5 cm) woodcut illustrations and 13 large illustrated woodcut initials (ca 3,2 x 3,2 cm). 33 ff. In spite of its signs of frequent use, the book is in very good condition for this type of work, which is usually in extremely poor condition. A beautifully illustrated and very rare 18th century Haggadah, setting forth the order of the Passover Seder" fully complete, with 14 large woodcut illustrations inspired by the "Amsterdam Haggadah" from 1695. The commentary by Rav Leone Modena found in this Hagadah, the famous ?Tzeli Esh,? is an abbreviation of Don Isaac Abrabanel?s voluminous commentary ?Zevach Pesach? first published during the author?s lifetime in Constantinople in 1505. The translation of the ?Tzeli Esh? into Yiddish is by Solomon Zalman ben Moses Raphael London (1661-1748), author and translator, who was active between 1709 and 1735. Leon de Modena (or Yehuda Aryeh Mi-Modena) (1571-1648) is considered the most famous Venetian Rabbi of the 17th century. He was a Jewish scholar born in Venice, into a family of migrants from France, after the French expulsion of Jews. He was well respected, but his reputation within traditional Judaism suffered both due to his criticism of emerging sects within Judaism, but also because of his addiction to gambling and seeming lack of stability. He is famous for his criticism of the mystical approach to Judaism and his attacks on the Kaballa, but his international fame mainly rests upon him being the interpreter of Judaism to the Christian world. He was the first since Josephus and Philo to write a Jewish text to non-Jewish readers (Historia de gli riti Hebraici, 1637), which was widely read by Christians and extremely influential. The editor Naftali Hertz ben Alexander Ziskind Levi Rofe of Emden ?set up his press in Amsterdam in 1726. He complemented his printing equipment with that purchased from the Isaac Templo press after it was closed down. He was a physician by profession, as evidenced by his moniker Rofe. He was granted title of doctor of medicine from the University of Harderwijk in 1716. He pursued his medical practice, as well as printing and bookselling. He was a member of a small group of Jewish intellectuals interested in scientific disputes. He tended to publish alone as well as in cooperation with others, but above all with his son-in-law Kosman ben Joseph Baruch, who was also involved in the book trade. Their cooperation lasted from 1742 to 1766, and resulted in many works being published.? (The Bezalel Narkiss Index of Jewish Art, The Center for Jewish Art).
