Die Autoren untersuchen die Geschehnisse in Frankreich und Italien, in den Rheinlanden, in Baden und in Wien. Die Mythen und Symbole der Französischen Revolution waren überall präsent, auch in den Köpfen der Protagonisten. Die Funktion und Bedeutung der Revolutionserinnerungen waren aber in verschiedenen sozialen Gruppen, politischen Lagern und Revolutionsphasen ganz unterschiedlich. Die alten Eliten malten das Schreckbild einer jakobinischen Terrorherrschaft an die Wand. Die bürgerlichen Eliten wollten politische Partizipationsansprüche ohne revolutionäre Gewalt durchsetzen; sie verwahrten sich entgegen dem Diktum von Marx geradezu beschwörend gegen eine Wiederholung der Französischen Revolution. So diente die jakobinische Symbolik, die von den Republikanern in Frankreich, Italien und Baden übernommen wurde, nur dazu, sozialrevolutionäre Tendenzen in unterbürgerlichen Schichten zu kanalisieren.Mit dem Sieg der Gegenrevolution überwanden die Konservativen ihre traumatische Erinnerung an die Französische Revolution.
