Mondiere, French physician of Loudun, is distinguished for having written Notes sur quelques maladies de Voesophage (1833). This is a comprehensive treatise with many notes and references and a concluding bibliography. Mondiere reviewed most of the earlier literature on polypi and scirrhous tumours of the oesophagus. He referred (without giving the year of publication) to a report by a French veterinary surgeon who successfully removed a scirrhous tumour from the gullet of a ram.
