Cette publication est l'une des toutes premières monographies françaises sur l'anesthésie au chloroforme, parue une année seulement après celle de Simpson et celle de Miller, et la même année que celle de Sédillot. Elle a paru au sein des Mémoires de l'Académie de Metz (dont cet exemplaire est détaché) et a fait l'objet d'un tirage à part (à 400 exemplaires). Joseph Hénot (1796-1852) fut chirurgien principal de première classe et professeur de clinique chirurgicale à l'hôpital militaire d'instruction de Metz. Il avait déjà rapporté, dès le 24 février 1847, sa première anesthésie à l'éther (pour une loupe enkystée de la joue).
