Bis heute ist die Bausubstanz aus dem 5. Jahrhundert weitestgehend erhalten. Seit dem Frühmittelalter stehen das kleine Heiligtum mit der Krippe Jesu und die Wunder vollbringende Marienikone, die dem Evangelisten Lukas zugeschrieben wird, im Zentrum der Verehrung.Auch Santa Maria in Trastevere beherbergt seit dem Frühmittelalter eine wundertätige Ikone und eine nach dem Vorbild von Santa Maria Maggiore gefertigte Krippe. Mit Beginn des Neubaus im 12.
