8vo (8.75" x 7"), full brown calf gilt spine in six compartments with gilt leather title piece. Frontis., [14], 358 pp., 32 folded engraved plates. Bookseller label at lower right of rear ffep. Bookplate at front pastedown mostly removed. CONDITION: Covers good+, rubbed, leather chipped at head of spine, .25" strip of leather title piece lacking, a few worming losses to endpapers at hinges, one small worming hole at top left of initial leaves, not affecting text; contents very good, some foxing and toning. First German edition. Raimondo Montecuccoli (16091680) was an Italian military commander, theorist, and diplomat. "Unequalled as a master of 17th-century warfare, Montecuccoli excelled in the art of fortification and siege, march and countermarch, and cutting his enemy's lines of communications" (Britannica). He served as General for the Habsburg Monarchy, and held the titles of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and Neapolitan Duke of Melfi. Art Nouveau-style bookplate by Austrian painter, illustrator, and designer Friedrich König, dated 1906 for Paul Wittgenstein (18421928, uncle of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein), mostly effaced at front pastedown.
