En 1896, Edouard Pelletan publia ses quatre premiers titres, à un rythme rapproché. Celui-ci est probablement le premier d'entre tous. Halbou, L. Petit et J. B. Simonet. (Cohen, 583 / Tchemerzine, VI, p. 396). Reliure de l'époque en basane rouge imitant le maroquin à longs grains. Dos lisse avec pièce de titre de maroquin vert, caissons ornés de fleurs, lyres et urnes antiques. Plats simplement encadrés de trois filets dorés. Dentelle végétale aux chasses. Toutes tranches dorées. Ex-libris: "Bibliothèque de Mr. Armand Bertin". Vente Armand Bertin, 1854, no. 1147. Ex-libris: "Bibliothèque de Mr. Léon Say". Beau fils du précédent. Bel exemplaire à très grandes marges et d'intéressante provenance. "Belle édition que recommandent surtout les gravures dont elle est ornée" (Brunet, III, 762). Louis-Marie-Armand Bertin (1801-1854), fut un journaliste de renom sous la monarchie de juillet. En 1822, il accompagna Chateaubriand à Londres; et dès 1841, à la mort de son père, il reprend la direction du Journal des Débats, conservant ainsi son rang élevé parmi les organes politiques et littéraires. Léon Say (1826-1896) fut homme d'État français, plusieurs fois ministre des finances entre 1872 et 1882. Par ailleurs, il est un des trois exécuteurs testamentaires de Victor Hugo avec Léon Gambetta et Jules Grévy. A la fois un roman et un grand poème, les Amours de Psyché et Cupidon est, comme le dit La Fontaine lui-même dans sa Préface, une oeuvre d'un genre littéraire intermédiaire: un récit poétique. Il fut publié pour la première fois en 1669 (Paris: Claude Barbin), en même temps que le poème d'Adonis. «Psyche et Cupidon illustrated by Moreau initiated a series of imposing illustrated books with Pierre Didot's inprint. La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles with plates after Fragonard also appeared this Year. Another Psyché et Cupidon, with plates after Gérard, was issued in 1797».
