Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition. Spine head and spine base bumped. 1997 Hard Cover. 126 pp. The Guide for the Perplexed is a work of Jewish theology by Maimonides. It seeks to reconcile Aristotelianism with Rabbinical Jewish theology by finding rational explanations for many events in the text. It was written in Judeo-Arabic, a dialect of Classical Arabic using the Hebrew alphabet. It was sent originally, part after part, to his student, Rabbi Joseph ben Judah of Ceuta, the son of Rabbi Judah, and is the main source of Maimonides' philosophical views, as opposed to his opinions on Jewish law. Since many of the philosophical concepts, such as his view of theodicy and the relationship between philosophy and religion, are relevant beyond Judaism, it has been the work most commonly associated with Maimonides in the non-Jewish world and it is known to have influenced several major non-Jewish philosophers. Following its publication, "almost every philosophic work for the remainder of the Middle Ages cited, commented on, or criticized Maimonides' views." Within Judaism, the Guide became widely popular, with many Jewish communities requesting copies of the manuscript, but also quite controversial, with some communities limiting its study or banning it altogether.

Hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. Dust Jacket Condition: Sehr gut. Umschlaggestaltung v. Rudolf Linn. (illustrator). 1. Auflage.

Moreh collated the autograph with the MSS of al-Jabarti s two short histories of the French occupation of Egypt, Muddat al-Faranss bi-Misr and Mahar al-taqds bi-dhahb dawlat al-Faranss. He also collated it with a number of other manuscripts of the Aja'ib, paying particular attention to the MSS which had been copied under al-Jabarti's own supervision. Al-Jabarti checked these copies himself, writing his corrections on the margins. Especially noteworthy is a manuscript in Maghribi script which was checked by the author and belonged to his friend Hasan al-Attar. Al-Attar took this MS with him on his travels, adding a variety of materials, some inspired by al-Jabarti himself. Al-ttar s material has been used in the present edition. Moreh has restored as far as possible the original grammatical usage and style of al-Jabarti, and his text includes passages omitted from the Bulaq edition. The readings given on the margins of the present edition indicate the revisions that al-Jabarti made to his opus magnum as a result of changing political circumstances in Egypt.'.
