Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 12th printing ; xiii, 145 pages : illustrations, maps ; 19 cm ; ISBN 9780945397182, 9780060723521, 0945397186, 0060723521 ; OCLC 28213758 ; LCCn 93025044 ; LOC No E99.K84 W35 1993 ; blue cloth in pictorial dustjacket ; Contents: Dedication -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- Hunger and cold take their toll -- "Let us die trying" -- Recalling old skills -- A painful journey -- Map -- Saving a cache of fish -- Sadness among The People -- The stillness is broken -- A new beginning -- About the Gwich'in People ; Based on an Athabascan Indian legend passed along for many generations from mothers to daughters of the upper Yukon River Valley in Alaska, this is the suspenseful, shocking, ultimately inspirational tale of two old women abandoned by their tribe during a brutal winter famine. ; Though these women have been known to complain more than contribute, they now must either survive on their own or die trying. In simple but vivid detail, Velma Wallis depicts a landscape and way of life that are at once merciless and starkly beautiful. In her old women, she has created two heroines of steely determination whose story of betrayal, friendship, community and forgiveness "speaks straight to the heart with clarity, sweetness and wisdom" (Ursula K. Le Guin). ; Velma Wallis is one in a family of thirteen children, all born in the vast fur-trapping country of Fort Yukon, Alaska, and raised with traditional Athabascan values. A writer and avid reader, she lives in Fairbanks. ; tear on back of dustjacket ; FINE/G. Book. …

Add to basketPolly Morgan is a contemporary British artist known for her taxidermy sculptures. As a member of the UK Guild of Taxidermists, she only uses animals that have died naturally or accidentally in her work. "I didn't want to sentimentalize nature," Morgan said of her work. "I wanted to show it as it is; cannibalistic, predatory and unnerving." Born in Banbury, United Kingdom in 1980, she graduated from the University of London with an English literature degree, taking up taxidermy as a hobby. Her career accelerated when she was commissioned to create work for "Santa's Ghetto", a show held in London curated by the artist Banksy. In 2011, her book Polly Morgan: Psychopomps was released. The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom. Polyurethane cast, ebony, acrylic, taxidermy snake, 2017, numbered from the edition of 10, 17 x 10 x 10 cm. (3.9 x 6.9 x 3.9 in.). …
