Add to basketFirst edition in English of volume III, and the second edition in English, revised, of volumes I and II. La Motraye's accounts are enhanced with plates by Hogarth, one of his earliest commissions in book illustration. This set is extra-illustrated with five plates, with most copies found with 56 plates and maps only. Aubrey de La Motraye (1674-1747), of Huguenot origin, began his travels in 1696 with a tour through Scandinavia. He sailed from London for Constantinople in 1698, travelling widely in Turkey and the Levant, where he witnessed the Janissaries' overthrow of Sultan Mustafa II in 1703. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1710-11, he visited Charles XII of Sweden, exiled at Bender, and entered his employ. He also visited the Crimea, Circassia, and the Volga estuary. The Volumes I and II, largely concerning the Ottoman Empire, were first published in 1723, with a French translation appearing in 1727. Volume III, covering later travels to Prussia, Russia, and Poland, was first published in French in 1732. Hogarth's attractive plates, initially appearing in the first edition of 1723, cover a range of subjects, including "An Emerald Vessel" from Genoa Cathedral, "The Inside of a Mosque", "The Seraglio" showing a Turkish harem, and "A Lapland Hut". Twelve plates are signed by Hogarth, while three are unsigned but attributed to him. Only in 1720 had Hogarth embarked on a career as an engraver, moving from silver to copper. In these early years, he undertook different work, such as funeral tickets, shop cards, and book illustration. The transition was not easy, though the printer John Nichols noted: "By indefatigable industry and uncommon strength of genius [Hogarth] has been the artificer of his own fame and fortune" (quoted in Riding, p. 68). Provenance: Elizabeth Wingfield St Aubyn (abt.1738-aft.1782) with her ownership inscription on the titles pages, dated 1765. She was the wife of Sir John St Aubyn, 4th Baronet (1726-1772). Atabey 661 and Blackmer 946 for the first edition in French (1727); Cross B18 & 25; Weber II 442-3. Jacqueline Riding, Hogarth: Life in Progress, 2021. 3 vols, folio in fours (350 x 222 mm). With 2 engraved frontispieces in vols I and III (identical), 54 similar plates and 5 maps, several double-page or folding (12 signed by Hogarth and 3 unsigned but attributed to him); initial licence leaf, final advertisement leaf. Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands to spines, compartments decoratively gilt-tooled, red morocco labels, rolled foliate border to covers in blind, red sprinkled edges. Scottish Rite of Freemasonry bookplates removed from front pastedowns, remnants in vols II and III. Binding professionally refurbished with joints and extremities repaired, gilt and colour retouched, covers superficially scuffed or marked, variable toning and occasional foxing, faint marginal damp staining in places, a few plates and maps slightly rumpled or with light dust soiling or short tears; vol. I: 2 plates repaired on verso, one map trimmed to neatline on left side, and 2 plates just a little trimmed; vol. II, one map nicked at lower edge, minor chip to top page-edge; vol. III, a few short marginal tears. A very good set, presenting well on the shelf.

Tafeln 3 & 4. - Cox I, 77-78; Paulitschke 686 (nur Bd. 1-2); Schiötz 567 a&d; Estreicher XXII, 600 f. und Lipperheide Cl 6-7 (beide nur Band 3 wie vorliegend und franz. Ausg. für Bd. 1-2); vgl. Blackmer 946 und Griep-Luber 764 (beide nur Band 1-2 in franz. Ausg.). - Scarce first edition of La Motrayes main work in 2 vols, translated from French manuscript and published 4 years earlier than the common French edition. Collating against Schiötz (who is ignorant of pl. 36B) we have 4 folding maps and 43 (of 45, lacking 26B and 30) engr. plates, mostly folding or double-leaf. "The plates are of particular insterest and include many signed by Hogarth, which form part of his early work." (Blackmer). Lacking also 4 leaves subscribers' list. Added is the quite rare supplement (1732) in English and French with an account of La Motraye's travels in Eastern and Northern Europe with 7 (of 9) engr. plates amd maps (lacking an engraved and a half-title and 2 plates). Vol. 1 and 2 of important provenience: The family De Coucy became quite popular through "A Distant Mirror" by Barbara Tuchman. Tuchman tells the story of the 14th century along the biography of Enguerrand de Coucy VII. - A few tears to folding plates. 2 corners of main work restored, else a clean and broad-margined copy in contemp. calf, worn, rebacked. The supplementary vol. somewhat narrow-margined, slightly browned, inobtrusive water-staining to few quires, inscription cut out from title. This volume bound in contemp. calf, slighty rubbed. Together 3 vols.
