Add to basketunbound. Condition: very good(+). Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 22.75" x 19.5", page including text measures 26.5" x 27 7/8". Beautiful and rare chart of the Atlantic including South America and parts of North America, Europe and Africa. Features lines of magnetic variation, or how much the compass deviates from true north. As explained in the two columns of pasted text, these observations are based upon the work of Dr. Edmond Halley in 1700 with additions in 1744. Other elements include two compass roses, extensive place names, and a note and depiction of fabled sea birds off the eastern coast of South America. The map was originally published by William Mount, John Mount and Thomas Page in "The English Pilot. The Fourth Book" circa 1750. This edition was reissued by William Mount II and James Davidson. Light offsetting. Expert repair to split along original centerfold. The "English Pilot" was a sea-chart atlas published in several editions from 1671 to 1803. The Mount family was active in publishing in various manifestations for many generations from the 1650s to 1800.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. A SHIPBOARD COPY OF THE ENGLISH PILOT USED BY AMERICAN CAPTAINS IN THE EARLY REPUBLIC -- FROM THE LIBRARY OF JOHN GOLDEN. London: J. Mount, T. Page, W. Mount and T. Page, 1780. Thirty-third edition (Verner). Folio (18 ¾" x 12 5/16", 477mm x 312mm). [Full collation available.] With 25 engraved charts, of which 8 are double, 12 folding and 4 integral with the text; and many woodcut charts and coastal profiles integral with the text. Bound in contemporary speckled sheep (re-backed) with a blind roll border. On the spine, five raised bands. Title green to red sheep in the second panel. All edges of the text-block sprinkled brown. Re-backed and re-cornered. A large (9 3/4", 250mm diameter) scorch-ring to the front board with soiling generally. Joints strengthened with Japanese paper, along with some similar repairs to the edges of a handful of leaves. Internally tanned and offset, with a little foxing and soiling. A few splits to the mapsheets, two with repairs. Large filled losses to the first and rear free end-papers. Ink ownership inscription of "John Tremells his Book Dated at Sea 1791/ Jno Tremells Cap.t Caleb Hathaway Master of the Brig Nancy" as well as verse, sums, lists, pen trials etc. to the rear binder's blank and end-papers (see below). Presented with two manuscript fragments (one a receipt from Tremells). Books of coastal charts and profiles had been published by the Dutch since the XVIc. Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer was the pioneer of the genre, such that "Waggoner" became the English term for coastal atlases, an early proprietary eponym. The English, great XVIIc enemies of the Dutch, began to catch up with John Seller's English Pilot series, beginning in 1671. Seller was named in that year hydrographer to Charles II, and began in earnest to chart the coasts of Britain (the first book), the Continent (the second), the Orient (third), America (fourth, first published 1689) and Africa (fifth). Cumming in his British Maps of Colonial America calls it "the first significant collection of charts exclusively of the American coasts to be published in England. . . The English Pilot: The Fourth Book must have been a godsend. . . to the navigator of American waters in that period, it was his Bible. Whatever its shortcomings, there was really no substitute, no real competitor, for over sixty years" (p. 39). Coolie Verner published "A carto-bibliographical study of The English Pilot. The Fourth Book" (1960), in which he traced 37 editions -- modern bibliographers might call some of them issues -- of a shifting and growing work that was published for over a century (the final edition was in 1794). From the 18 charts of the first edition the present work has grown to 25. Bibliographers are keen to assert the rarity of the work, though that is not entirely borne out by the market. That said, of this 1780 edition, there are just 9 examples in institutional collections per OCLC. What distinguishes the present volume is the rich set of annotations by an early owner: John Tremells, an American sailor active in the 1790's and 1800's, who received and doubtless used the volume while at sea. The ownership inscription may indicate that it was given to Tremells by Captain Caleb Hathaway, master of the brig Nancy in 1795. By 1798 Tremells was commanding the schooner Swift as a merchantman in the "Quasi-War" between the U.S. and France, principally over Caribbean maritime rights, which was a turning-point in the buildup of the U.S. Navy. Indeed, it seems that Hathaway -- and perhaps Tremells as well -- was in Philadelphia; several of their circle corresponded with Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. Arader has acquired the present volume twice: first at Swann (6 December 2007, lot 20) and again at the Sotheby's New York sale of John Golden (22 November 2022, lot 39); Golden purchased the book from Arader in October 2010. 'THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT COLLECTION OF CHARTS EXCLUSIVELY OF THE AMERICAN COASTS TO BE PUBLISHED IN ENGLAND'.The series of'English Pilot'books commenced in 1671 at the hand of John Seller, whose charts derived from the Dutch pilot books of Pieter Goos. 'Seller's'English Pilot'initiated the independent production of pilot books in England which ultimately overcame Dutch predominance' (Koeman, IV, p. xiii). 'For British trading in North America and for the colonists there, the publication of'The English Pilot: The Fourth Book' must have been a godsend. For the first time an English sea atlas presented charts of the whole eastern seacoast of North America. To modern eyes the charts are crude and sparse of detail; but to the navigator of American waters in that period, it was his Bible. Whatever its shortcomings, there was really no substitute, no real competitor, for over sixty years' (Cumming). This work was in such high demand that 37 editions were published from 1689 to 1794, as were three pirated editions. During the history of publication, the charts went through numerous changes, starting with the 18 charts in the first edition, new and replacement charts were added regularly. Verner notes that 64 different chart titles have been recorded from the editions he examined. Due to its practical nature and use, copies of all editions are quite rare. This edition is published at the conclusion of the French and Indian War. Only three examples are recorded in the English Short Title Catalogue: Bowdoin College, Dalhousie University and Yale University. Indeed, this edition has not been seen in auction since 1956.The 'English Pilot' was the first completely English sea atlas and the 'West-India Navigation' the first English sea atlas of the Americas. It was the 'bible' for mariners trading in American waters. This edition of 1763 was the last that bore the imprint of William Mount who retired in the same year, he died in 1769. The 1760's was a period of change for the atlas in that some maps were retired and new ones introduced. Using Verner's collations, four charts appear to be new to this edition including the 'New and Correct Chart of Cuba, Streights of Bahama ?' It appears that 3 maps were dropped for this edition, two of them are old plates first issued in 1721 and a version of the even earlier Edmund Halley plate of the Atlantic Ocean. All editions of the 'English Pilot' are rare, and because of the demand for North American material the 'Fourth Book' particularly so. Charts of interest include the two-sheet reduction of eight sheet marine atlas by Cyprian Southack (1662-1745) was a sea captain based in Boston, a privateer and mapmaker. It was the first marine atlas produced in America. Mark Tiddeman's charts of New York harbour and the 'Draught of Virginia'.Provenance: with inscription on the title page of 'Peter Weston Book 1795'; acquired July 2000 for a private English collection. The series of English Pilot books was started in 1671 by John Seller, whose charts derived from the Dutch pilot books of Pieter Goos. "Seller's English Pilot initiated the independent production of pilot books in England which ultimately overcame Dutch predominance" (Koeman). The work was so popular that 37 editions were published from 1689-1794, with the number of charts varying from 18 in the first edition to 26 in the last. "For British trading in North America and for the colonists there, the publication of The English Pilot: The Fourth Book must have been a godsend. For the first time an English sea atlas presented charts of the whole eastern seacoast of North America. To modern eyes the charts are crude and sparse of detail; but to the navigator of American waters in that period, it was his Bible. Whatever its shortcomings, there was really no substitute, no real competitor, for over sixty years" (William P. Cumming, British Maps of Colonial America, Chicago & London 1974, p.39). (William P. Contact seller5-star sellerVery good. Centerfold reinforced, few marginal mends not affecting image. Size 17.75 x 26.75 Inches. This detailed, large 1773 Mount and Page map of Jamaica was, at the time of its publication, one of the most accurate maps of the island available to the English navigator - The English Pilot being the first entirely English sea atlas to focus on American waters. A Closer Look The map, properly speaking, is more of a chart - showing its best detail in coastal features, such as anchorages. Numerous depth soundings appear, and data for elevations just inland is provided. Port Royal, Kingston, Spanish Town, Careening Caye, and Rock Fort are all shown, with the rest of the island bereft of settlement, apart from Trelawny town (noted in the location of the parish of that name, which does not appear.) The interior of the island - which would be the site of both the island's sugar industry and its long history of slave uprisings, appears vacant here. Whether this is due to a lack of data or the primary role of this map as a coastal chart is unclear. Publication History and Census This map appeared in Mount and Page's navigational atlas, The English Pilot . It was included in the fourth volume, which was dedicated to the navigation of the West Indies. Many editions of the atlas were produced, and there is little to distinguish one edition from another as the publishers were less than diligent in updating their work. References: Rumsey 12434.000. 1742 William Mount and Thomas Page Nautical Chart of Chesapeake Bay

Contact seller5-star sellerExcellent. Some very faint glue toning at juncture of two sheets, else a fine, undamaged example with complete margins. Size 19.75 x 31.25 Inches. This is a superb example of William Mount and Thomas Page's large nautical map of the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay in the 1742 first state. It represents the dominant English depiction of the water approaches to Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey for most of the Colonial Period. A Closer Look The map's basic outline was derived from Augustine Hermann's 1673 Virginia and Maryland. Coolie Verner considered Thornton's Virginia chart 'a careful and exact copy of the Herman (sic)', but it was augmented in the north from other sources, as were its array of depth soundings and shoals. The westward-oriented chart covers the mid-Atlantic coast, from Staten Island to Virginia Beach. It includes the lower reaches of the Susquehanna and Delaware Rivers. The Potomac is depicted as far as what is here termed Turkey Buzzard Point. Not to be mistaken for the modern peninsula of that name on the Patuxent River, Turkey Buzzard Point was later shortened to Buzzard Point, which overlooks the juncture of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and constitutes the southernmost tip of present-day Washington, D.C. While it does identify the colonies, and names the counties within them, as a chart the work is focused on waterways and does not include detail of the interior, such as cities and roads. The chart is abundantly marked with rhumb lines and depth soundings and sports two elegant compass roses. Publication History and Census Initially engraved in 1689 by John Thornton, for inclusion in his Atlas Maritimus . After a long run in that nautical atlas, the plate passed to Mount and Page just prior to Thornton's death in 1707-8, after which they began to publish the chart in their The English Pilot . The age of the plates necessitated their re-engraving to two new ones in and around 1742. The easiest point of recognition for these second plate examples is the lettering 'VIR GIN IA' for that colony's name. Coolie Verner's cartobibliography of the Virginia maps appearing in The English Pilot enumerates two states for the second plate of the chart. The 1773 second state of the second plate exhibited the changed spelling of the place name 'Jarsey' to 'Jersey' as well as sporting a longer tail in the 'g' of Page's imprint. The spelling 'Jarsey' appearing on this example, as well as the long tail of the 'g', identifies this as the first state of the second plate. Examples of this version of the map were included in editions of The English Pilot from 1743 to 1770. The English Pilot is well represented in institutional collections, but we see just four separate examples of this state of the chart in OCLC. References: OCLC 58401035. Burden, P. Contact seller5-star sellerVery good. Slight toning. Minor wear on original centerfold. Close left and right margins. Size 18 x 22.5 Inches. A very attractive c. 1750 example of John Thornton and Mount and Page's important nautical chart or maritime map of the eastern coast of North America from Cape Henry to the Mouth of the St. Lawrence. A Closer Look The map includes the coasts of Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maine, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland as well as illustrating the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay in full. Shading indicates the various offshore shoals, including the Nantucket Shoals, St. Georges Bank, the Shoals of Acadia, the Sable Island Shoals, and others. Depth soundings appear throughout, particularly on shoals and important harbors such as the Chesapeake Bay, New York, and Martha's Vineyard. Various rivers, cities, and towns are noted along the coast including Philadelphia, New York, Boston, among others. Publication History This important and popular chart was issued in various editions of The English Pilot and the Atlas Maritimus for almost 100 years. There are only two known states, of which this is the second. The first state was drawn by John Thornton in 1698 and the second revised by Mount and Page 1749, both were published by Mount and Page. Cartographically, the two are similar being based upon the same Thornton data; however, in the second state the author added decorative draping to the cartouche and changed the title from 'New Found Land' to 'New Foundland.' The Irish map publisher George Grierson also published a pirated version of this map in 1749 and 1767. Contact seller5-star sellerVery good. Some uneven toning. Light impression. Size 18 x 22 Inches. A rare 1763 Mount and Page nautical chart or maritime map of the coast of South Carolina issued at the end of the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). Centered on Charleston (Charles Town), the map covers from the Santee River and Cape Romain (Cape Roman) to Hilton Head and Port Royal - a prosperous area covering the main ports of the cotton and tobacco trade. The cartographer notes various Indian and European Settlements, including the Scotts Settlements, Sr. Peter Colleons Signory, the Edestow Setlements (Edisto Settlements), the site of a Sewee Indian village, and more. There are soundings along much of the coastline, but particularly concentrated around Charleston and Port Royal Publication History and Census This chart was first drawn by John Thornton and issued in the 1706 edition of the English Pilot, the Fourth Book . Thornton derived the basic cartography from the 1685 manuscript map of Maurice Mathews (1694), leader of the notorious Barbadian planter gang, the 'Goose Creek Men.' The present example is the third state, issued by Mount and Page is 1863 or 1864. This map exists in three known states, all of which are identical with the exception of the imprint: State 1 - 1706 - bears John Thornton Imprint. State 2 - 1716 - bears John Thornton Imprint. State 3 - 1763/4 - bears Mount and Page imprint. Today all states of this early South Carolina chart are extremely scarce and rarely appear on the market. References: OCLC 948604320.
