Addressed in handwriting to "My dear Friend" - "Thank you so much for your letter of 5th February. I will certainly write to Prince Philip, and will forward your letter to him a week or two before the Queen and he set off on their tour. It will be better not to send it now as that would be too far ahead. At the time I send him your letter I will write and let you know with which member of the staff you should get in touch to see if H.M. and Prince Philip will be able to see you for a little private conversation. With my warmest wishes, yours sincerely, Edwina Mountbatten of Burma [handwritten]".…

Addressed in handwriting to "My dear Mr Fisher" and ending with handwritten signature "yours sincerely, Edwina Mountbatten of Burma" The letter thanks Mr Fisher for sending her some photographs, including one of her father she hadn't previously seen, also mentioning that her daughter Pamela had been very happy to make his acquaintance whilst visiting New Zealand. He had requested Pamela to put forward for a signature of Her Majesty the Queen on one of the photographs, but the request was denied by the Queen's private secretary. …

A presentation run of this rare periodical, inscribed by the editor on the front pastedown, "For Lady Mountbatten. My dear Lady Mountbatten, This bound volume of Young Malayans comes to you and your husband with our very best wishes for your happiness and long life. Richard Sidney, Editor. 15 Perak Road, Kuala Lumpur, Malaya. 26 June 1952." The inscription is countersigned by four members of the magazine's staff, including Kong Yulin (secretary), Pang Yow Chee (manager), Chan Kai (photographer), and Lum Sien Yuen (general assistant). Immediately following the Second World War, Edwina Mountbatten established the Welfare Council for Malaya. In 1952, she toured south-east Asia and, following her return to the UK, called for St John Ambulance to send medical teams to provide aid to Malaya's "new villages" (resettlement camps). Her work, as with this periodical, reflected British beliefs that humanitarianism and education could be an effective tool of counterinsurgency. Quarto (305 x 215 mm).
