First performed and published in 1697, The Mourning Bride was Congreve"s only tragedy, a tale of dynastic conflict and concealed identity set in Granada. 1792 The Refusal; or, The Ladies Philosophy. A Comedy by Colley Cibber. ESTC No.: N24340. First performed at Drury Lane in 1721, Cibber"s comedy reworks Moliere"s Les Femmes savantes, incorporatingthe play into contemporary English society with allusions to the South Sea Bubble. 1792 The Discovery. A Comedy by Frances Sheridan. ESTC No.: N16641. First performed at Drury Lane in 1763, The Discovery is a comedy of courtship, secrecy, and misunderstanding. William Congreve (1670-1729) was one of the leading Restoration dramatists; Colley Cibber (1671-1757) was an actor-manager, playwright and Poet Laureate; and Frances Sheridan was an important 18th century novelist and playwright.
