Alfred Weber hatte die Gruppe 1946 mit Dolf Sternberger gegründet. Zu den Sitzungen wurde jeweils mit gedruckten Tagesordnungen eingeladen. Das Anliegen der ersten Zusammenkünfte, die im April, Juni und Oktober 1947 stattfanden, war die Frage eines geeinten Deutschlands und die Entnazifizierung der Gesellschaft.
