Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Large softcover, light gray exterior decorated on front and rear. The spine has the title and author's name written by hand. Exterior shows creases on front and back along with soiling and spotting. Interior binding is good, no hinge issues. Inscribed and signed by the author on the dedication page to a crewmember of the USS Pope. This same page shows another signature and address as well - this one being Vice Admiral Edward A. Parker, who was the Lt. Cmdr and Commander of the USS Parrott at the time. The opposite page, which is the underside of the cover sews the original owner's name and address of which the book is inscribed to (Lionel A. Normandin of the USS Pope - DD-225). In addition, the last free end page shows signatures and assignment info on an additional 19 enlisted and officers, most of which lists the ships they were on at the time of the campaign. At least one of the signatures matches a name of one of the quotes used in the preface (W. E. "Rebel" Morgan). Some of the ships listed by the names include the destroyers USS Paul Jones (DD-230), USS Parrott (DD-218), USS Barker (DD-213), USS Whipple (DD-217), USS Babbitt (DD-128), and the USS Alden (DD-211). The owner of the book was assigned to the USS Pope, which was attacked and destroyed on 01 March, 1942. The surviving crew spent nearly 60 hours in the water before being rescued. There is some minor markings on the text pages - a box was drawn around the names of a group of destroyers on one of the pages in the front and I thought I saw a sentence underlined on one of the other pages when I first flipped through the book but I could not find the page on a closer inspection. A unique copy signed by many heroes whose bravery and sacrifices were long forgotten until this book was published. Signed by Author(s).

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Jürgen Habermas has argued that democracy depends on all citizens recognizing the legitimacy of the law. Therefore, political argument must appeal only to public reason which is secular. Religious citizens must translate their reasons into a secular language accessible to the public. This dissertation argues that religious arguments are justified in public discourse if they refrain from dogmatism. Moreover, there is nothing inherent in secular reasons that make them publicly accessible or likely to generate consensus among members of a pluralistic society. If we treat religious arguments as simply arguments with controversial premises, it becomes less clear why religious arguments are singled out as particularly problematic for liberal democracies, since many secular political arguments share this feature. Granted, religious reasons are unlikely to secure consensus, but this does not count against them if consensus is not the goal of democratic discourse. This dissertation makes the case that Habermas, and other liberal theorists such as Rawls, have placed too much emphasis on consensus as the goal of democracy. Moreover, what they refer to is not practical consensus achieved pragmatically through compromise, but an idealized consensus that is the achievement of secular reason. This is problematic for two main reasons: there is no normative reason to think we ought to attain such consensus and such consensus is unlikely to be achieved in practice. Thus, there seems to be no normative force to the claim that religious citizens ought to translate their arguments into secular language.
