Marine and landscape painter, etcher, illustrator, writer and lecturer. Born 4 July 1903, West Chittington, Sussex, son of Oliver Hall RA. Educated at Queen Elizabeth School, Cranbrook, Kent, 1914-19. He had no formal art training but studied - by copying works of landscape - under the direction of his father, launching his career as a landscape painter at the age or 15. First exhibited, as Grahame Hall at the RA , 1921 and '22. Adopted the name of Claude Muncaster, 1922 (formally changed by deed poll, 1947). First solo exhibition Fine Arts Society, 1926. Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society, 1931, and full member from 1936. Founder member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, and later president (1958-74). Made several sea voyages, writing and illustrating his experiences in Rolling Round the Horn, 1933. During WWII served in the RNVR, advising on camouflage of shipping. He exhibited extensively and his work is held world-wide, including the Tate Gallery. Watercolours of royal residences commissioned by Queeen Elizabeth, 1946-7. Author of: The Students' Book of Watercolour Painting, 1938; Landscape and Marine Painting in Oils and Watercolours, 1958. He died on 30 November1974 at his home in Sutton Nr Pullborough. This lavishly illustrated biography, written by the artist's son has a a foreword written by H.R.H. Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh.…
