Very Good in Dustjacket. 0803223579. 196 pages. hardcover. keywords: TV Sociology Media. DESCRIPTION - Big World, Small Screen assesses the influence of television on the lives of the most vulnerable and powerless in American society: children, ethnic and sexual minorities, and women. Many in these groups are addicted to television, although they are not the principal audiences sought by commercial TV distributors because they are not the most lucrative markets for advertisers. This important book illustrates the power of television in stereotyping the elderly, ethnic groups, gays and lesbians, and the institutionalized and, thus, in contributing to the self-image of many viewers. They go on to consider how television affects social interaction, intellectual functioning, emotional development, and attitudes (toward family life, sexuality, and mental and physical health, for example). They illustrate the medium's potential to teach and inform, to communicate across nations and cultures - and to induce violence, callousness, and amorality. Parents will be especially interested in what they say about television viewing and children. Finally, they offer suggestions for research and public policy with the aim of producing programming that will enrich the lives of citizens all across the spectrum. Nine psychologists, members of the Task Force on Television and Society appointed by the American Psychological Association, have collaborated on Big World, Small Screen. inventory #16964.

This report is an essential primary source document for understanding American history during this era, presenting an intimate look at the implementation of polygamy and other laws in the Utah Territory. The author was an active participant in the events he recounts, being in charge of enforcing national laws in a territory that had an adversarial relationship with the federal government. The report goes into great detail about the conflicts between those who desired to live according to the laws of the United States, and those who wished to continue the outlawed practice of polygamy. The author gives a detailed view of the cases that came before his court, including the trials of some prominent Mormon leaders. He shows that prosecution was difficult because Mormon juries often refused to convict fellow members of their community. The report explores the struggle to establish a balance between religious and civil law, and the difficulties in enforcing laws that many of the inhabitants did not agree with. The author's goal was to establish a republican form of government in Utah, but he found widespread resistance among the Mormon population, who saw these laws as an attack on their religion and culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. The author organized the work into sections devoted to various aspects of the topic, such as production, transportation, storage, and advertising. Each of these main subject areas is split into subsections that cover more specific topics relating to the main subject. The subsections are granular and cover particular commodities, allowing the reader to quickly find and review sections of interest. For example, subsections on apples, citrus fruits, peaches, and grapes are present under the main subject area of "Canned and Dried Fruits." The author also includes topics on grading, standardization, and inspection, as well as cooperatives, costs, and pricing. The book provides valuable insight into the economic influence of the fruit and vegetable trade for the chosen time frame. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
