Napoléon III joua un rôle fondamental dans la redécouverte des peuples gaulois avec le lancement des premières grandes fouilles. Fasciné par Jules César, il avait décidé d'écrire sa biographie. Pour retrouver la trace de Gergovie, d'Alésia et des autres lieux de batailles engloutis de la conquête romaine, il avait choisi de changer de méthode en ne se contentant plus d'interpréter la Guerre des Gaules. Les premières grandes fouilles modernes vont naître. C'esc t la « preuve par la pioche » sur un modèle d'organisation militaire. L'aide de camp de l'Empereur, Eugène Stoffel (qui rédigea une grande partie de l'ouvrage), dirigea les campagnes de fouilles à Gergovie, Alésia et dans l'Aisne. Des cartes furent dressées par la Commission de topographie des Gaules, les premières vues photographiques prises. En dix ans, les archéologues mirent au jour quantité de vestiges de la Gaule avant les Romains, dont certains seront exposés au tout nouveau Musée des Antiquités nationales inauguré en 1867 à Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Une archéologie officielle était née ; une fois pour toutes Alésia était localisée en Bourgogne, à Alise Ste Reine. Aujourd'hui, pour certains, ce sont des erreurs intentionnelles successives, dont les origines sont purement politiques et remontent à Napoléon III, qui ont créé cette situation. Le contexte politique était propice : Napoléon III écrivait l'histoire de Jules César, et ne pouvait pas ne pas dire où était localisée Alésia. Par la suite, après le désastre de Sedan, la IIIe République avait elle aussi besoin d'écrire l'histoire de France. Elle préférait persister dans les erreurs de Napoléon III, plutôt que laisser une question provisoirement sans réponse dans l'histoire enseignée à l'école laïque.Bon exemplaire, traces de mouillure angulaire à la fin du 2e volume.
