Contact seller5-star seller2 volumes. RARE FIRST EDITION IN PRESENTATION BINDING. A UNIQUE COPY. A family presentation copy, inscribed to George E. Mercer from I. Tod-Mercer and dated [18]96. 8vo, in a beautiful Zaehnsdorf signed binding dated 1896, thus no doubt custom made for the presentation to George E. Mercer. The binding is of full crushed scarlet morocco richly adorned in fine late-Victorian style. The boards feature a wide frame of gilt vines, flowers and thistles which is further ruled in gilt then further surrounded by minutely detailed gilt rolling, the upper boards also lettered "Mercer's Waterloo" in fine gilt stamping, the smooth rounded spines with gilt lettering with a gilt oval surrounded by more gilt vines and flowers which then grow both up and below to fully frame the spine panel, board edges gilt ruled, wide turn-ins gilt tooled in the same motif as the covers, silk endpapers with powder blue moire pattern and further gilt tooling complete this beautiful presentation, a.e.g. xii, 369; viii, 347 pp. An extraordinary set, the condition remains outstanding. The text-block is essentially pristine, the fine bindings show only the most minimal evidence of age. Truly and outstanding and unique copy. A SCARCE AND IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION, SCARCE IN ANY STATE AND THIS AN EXTRAORDINARY COPY. Mercer's 'Journal' is an important source for historians of the Waterloo campaign, as well as a detailed description of the landscape and people of Belgium and France in the early 19th century. It is one of the few accounts of the period written by an artillery officer. Mercer's journals were kept throughout the campaign of 1815 but were not published until 1870, after his death. The work was compiled and written in its finished form some 30 years earlier, from the original notes Mercer wrote contemporaneously, with additions and verifications from correspondence and other sources. It covers the period from April 1815 to January 1816. Although he eventually rose to the rank of general, his fame is as commander of the British G Troop Royal Horse Artillery in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Waterloo. It is also notable for its lengthy descriptions of the countryside and its people. In spite of his position with the British Army, the work is usually found in 20th Century editions in French. Its historical value in the English-speaking nations was largely overlooked till its rediscovery with a Praeger edition in 1970.…

Sewn card covers (cover title "de Bataille vas det Schoon Verbond met de Marsch en Aval der Franschen . . . etc.") 1p (explanation of the plan) +61pp+3pp+11pp. 2 hand-colored fold-out maps of the Waterloo battlefield with another fold-out engraving ("Afbeelding van het huis, gezegt het Schoon Verbond . . ") small portrait engraving of Wellington on the title page; at some early stage tissue was affixed to card covers, tissue now browned and chipped at edges, but card covers remain very good with minimal edgewear; uncut pages. 'Schoon Verbond' is the earliest Dutch translation of the Prussian term 'Belle Alliance,' used for the Battle of Waterloo. It is also the name of the small farm in the Province of Brabant, Belgium (the subject of the engraving) which was at the center of the French position in the battle and Napoleon's headquarters (The British designated the battle 'Waterloo' after the small town where Wellington had his headquarters, thinking that a name calling to mind the enemy command post was unsuitable.) This is an exceptionally clean and stable copy, with virtually no foxing, marks or staining; the maps and engraving are very clean and bright; an exceptionally scarce and desirable piece of Napoleonic history; very few copies are left in private hands, and only a small number in libraries this copy is from the private collection of the late Edward Lathem, longtime director of the Dartmouth College Libraries, photos and provenance on request.…

Add to basketOne of the great figures in world history. See his entries in Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Oxford DNB. On one side of piece of laid paper rougly 11 cm squarer, with partial watermark 'J G'. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, with traces of mount on blank reverse. Folded twice. Reads: 'London March 7 1842 / F M The Duke of Wellington presents his Compliments to Miss Busby / Not being resident at Oxford he has no Controul [sic] over any matter relating to the Bodleian Library. / Miss Busby should apply to the Vice Chancellor. -' The identity of the actual writer of the letter has been questioned in pencil at the foot of page with 'Qy Secy' (i.e. 'Query? Secretary'), and the doubt does not seem unjustified. It may well be that this item is in the Duke's hand - the writing certainly has his characteristic slope - but although it is superficially similar, there are several elements in the calligraphy that raise a strong doubt: the 'L' and 'M' of the date 'London March'; all four initials in 'F M The Duke', the fact that the second 'l' in 'Wellington' is looped, and in particular the fact that the 'r' in 'resident' and 'n' in 'no' begin below the line of writing, which is not a characteristic observed in the Duke's writing at any period. Ode On The Death of the Duke of Wellington
Tennyson, Alfred Lord [Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, FRS (6 August 1809 - 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen Victoria's reign and remains one of the most popular British poets]. Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, KG, GCB, GCH, PC, FRS (1 May 1769 - 14 September 1852) was an Anglo-Irish soldier and Tory statesman who was one of the leading military and political figures of 19th-century Britain, serving twice as Prime Minister. He won a notable victory against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
