Sie liegt am Mittelmeer, ungefähr 270 km südlich von Tunis und ist heute mit rund 270.000 Einwohnern die zweitgrößte Stadt des Landes. Sie ist vor allem als Wirtschaftszentrum bekannt. Das antike Taparura wurde von den Römern ungefähr 3 km entfernt von der heutigen Stadt Sfax errichtet. Es blieben kaum Überreste erhalten. Als die Aghlabiden die muslimische Stadt im 9. Jahrhundert aufbauten, wurde Taparura als 'Steinbruch' genutzt. Das unter Hadrian zur Colonia erhobene Thaenae lag 12 km weiter südlich. Die Stadt erlangte wirtschaftliche Bedeutung als Exporteur von Olivenöl und getrocknetem Fisch. Von 1148 an war sie vom normannischen König von Sizilien, Roger II., besetzt, welcher 1159 von den Almohaden unter Abd al-Mu'min vertrieben wurde. Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts kam die Händlerfamilie Fourati von Kerbala im Irak nach Sfax, von wo ein Familienzweig nach Tunis zog und dort Teil der Aristokratie wurde. Sfax ist ein Zielort für viele Migranten und Flüchtlinge aus zahlreichen anderen afrikanischen Staaten. Dagegen ist mir einmal in der Hauptstadt Tunis -: im Frühjar 1889 - ein Lied dieser Gattung von Hochzeitssängern aus Südosttunisien vorgetragen und dann von demselben Manne diktiert worden, der mir die Texte zu meinen "Tripolitanisch-tunisischen Beduinenliedern" (s. oben S. 3) lieferte, nämlich von einem gewissen Bilgasem. der aus der berberischen Gegend von Mätmätä stammte. Wenn ich das betreuende Stück von Kleidungs-Poesie in jener Sammlung nicht publizierte, so unterblieb dies aus dem Grunde, daß ich über die Metrik des Textes noch nicht ins Klare gekommen war; die Untersuchung der metrischen Verhältnisse solcher Lieder bildete aber gerade den Hauptgegenstand jener meiner Publikation.
