Condition: Fine. Second Edition. xxix,(7)191;223,(1) pp. Octavo (200 X 125 mm) Bound in 20th century half blue morocco and blue cloth. Spine ruled in 6 compartments. Gilt title. Blue cloth endpapers to match. Bookplate on front pastedown and rear of endpaper. Folding map used as a frontispiece. Two other folding maps. 19 engrave…d plates including 7 folding. A few of the plates have old minor repairs on the fold lines. Generally a clean attractive copy in a modern binding. A very interesting copy of this title with a great early provenance. The first bookplate is for the collection of Bassett Jones. The bookplate is based on an illustration out of one of William Edward Parry's books. It shows the Hecla and the Griper locked in the ice. Jones was a very early polar collector and his collection was the bases of an exhibit at the Grolier Club in 1932. His collection was sold to Columbia University in 1944. Over years I have seen maybe 5 volumes with the bookplate in them. It would seem either Jones disposed of a few items over the years or perhaps the university had duplicated. This copy has an interesting letter laid in loosely. The letter gives the book to Jones's friend Dr. Charles Conydon as he had upgraded to a first edition from the second edition. This was done in 1937. Jones also say he was the person that had it rebound! The second bookplate is from noted English polar book collector Richard Campbell.

Second edition; 8vo (20 x 12.5 cm); 3 folding engraved maps, 19 engraved plates, of which 7 folding, some unobtrusive marginal staining, discreet contemporary annotations to margins, lower left corner of title with small tear but not text lost; contemporary panelled sprinkled calf, professionally rebacked to style with endpapers… renewed, all edges speckled red, a little wear, a very good copy; [2], xvi, xxi-xxix, [7], 191, [1], 223, [1] pp. The preferred extended second edition of a work that presents one of the earliest English accounts of Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage to Tonga and Fiji. Tasman was also the first European to reach Tasmania and New Zealand. In addition there is a detailed description of Narbrough's passage in the Batchelour through the Straits of Magellan into the South Pacific and on to Chile. He successfully proved that trade with South America could be profitable without Spanish oversight, which influenced Britain's foreign policy for the next half century. This edition is more desirable with the additional chart of the western and southern oceans, not present in the first edition, and added text relating to whaling off Greenland. Hill, 1476; Howgego I, N3; Sabin 72186.
