First Edition
Condition: Near Fine. First Printing. 4to. Pp. [2], 3 - 128. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photography and reproductions of ephemera, paintings, etc. Bound in stiff red wraps with white lettering, saddle-stapled. Just a hint of edge-wear. A bright copy. Of particular interest is the recollection of Joseph Hansen, a farm kid from Utah who became one of Trotsky's bodyguards. His accounts of Stalin's GPU manhunt of Trotsky ("The Attempted Assassination of Leon Trotsky" and "With Trotsky to the End", both included here) and their eventual success in assassinating him is a gripping page-turner that reads like a spy thriller. The assassin Ramon Mercader finished the job after worldwide-pursuit, attacking Trotsky in Mexico City with an ice-axe that a climber would use, and not the ice-pick as apocrypha would have it.Following his prison sentence, Mercader was given a hero's welcome in Cuba; the head of the KGB awarded him Russia's highest decoration, Hero of the Soviet Union. Now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve with an acid-free backing. Stiff printed wrappers saddle-stapled.
