Congressman, Nesmith gave these remarks to the Oregon Pioneer Association. at its reunions in 1875 amd 1880. He travelled to Oregon with Applegate's first wagon train in 1843. He had also been, from 1857-1859, Superintendent of Indian Affairs. He was elected U. S. Senator from Oregon in 1860, as a Douglas Democrat. [ Not in Mintz]. Includes an 8-page biography of Nesmith.
