Jean Coene IV, one of the few illuminators of th…e time who is known by name, furnished the unusual work with a completely illustrated calendar and twenty-four - of formerly twenty-seven - large miniatures. The book of hours, which is privately owned, is now being presented to the public in its entirety for the first time - accompanied by an examination of the role of the client and of the classification of Jean Coene IV as an illuminator Roll within the context of Parisian book art around 1500. ; Vermutlich im Auftrag der niederrheinischen Prinzessin und späteren Herzogin von Lothringen, Philippa von Geldern (1467-1546), entstand zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts im Umfeld des Pariser Hofes ein reich illustriertes Stundenbuch. Jean Coene IV., einer der wenigen namentlich bekannten Buchmaler der Zeit, stattete das außergewöhnliche Werk mit einem komplett durchillustrierten Kalender und 24 (von einst wohl 27) großen Miniaturen aus. Zu dieser Zeit war der Buchdruck in Paris bereits in voller Blüte, dennoch wird hier der traditionellen Buchherstellung der Vorrang gegeben. D…as Gebetbuch zeichnet sich vor allem durch seine Bilderfülle aus: Fortlaufende gemalte Erzählungen rahmen alle Textseiten und wirken mit ihren erklärenden Begleitzeilen wie Vorläufer der Comic Strips. Eine zweite, allerdings unvollendete, Handschrift desselben Künstlers, die unlängst auftauchte, scheint mit dem königlichen Gebetbuch in Beziehung zu stehen. Wie die beiden Manuskripte interagieren und mit dem König verbunden sein könnten wird ebenso untersucht wie die Frage, in welchem künstlerischen Kontext der Maler anzusiedeln ist. 255 Seiten mit 247 Abb., gebunden (Hirmer Verlag 2016).
