Hardback, dark green cloth with gilt titling to upper board. 22 × 14cm, 137pp. An autobiography of Hamlet Nicholson, detailing his life as a 19th-century religious and political activist. A large part of the book is dedicated to Nicholson's staunch opposition to the rise of Ritualism (High Church practices) within the Church of England. He provides a first-hand account of his struggles at Rochdale Parish Church, his conflicts with the Vicar and church officials, the tension between traditional Protestantism and newer ritualistic practices, and the persecution he felt due to his beliefs. He also describes his work with the Conservative movement, with involvement in local elections. And if that wasn't enough, in 1871 he was noted for manufacturing a patent rubber compound cricket ball. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age. There is some light rubbing and marking to the boards and spine ends, and the inner binding has a little movement but otherwise remaining in good, strong readable condition.
