De geografie van Oceanie is echter niet vanzelfspr…ekend: enkele duizenden eilanden die op de wereldkaart amper zichtbaar zijn, verloren in de onmetelijkheid van de oceaan. Het is enigszins paradoxaal dat men dit uitgestrekte gebied, dat grotendeels uit water bestaat, het 5de 'continent' noemde. De eenheid wordt echter verzekerd door banden die steeds opnieuw aangehaald worden, door intensieve contacten en het veelvuldige reizen tussen de eilanden. De geschiedenis is niet minder complex dan elders ter wereld. Er ontwikkelden zich samenlevingen met een bijzonder rijke inhoud, als erfenis van de opeenvolgende migratiegolven en voortdurende uitwisselingen. Het resultaat is een ingewikkelde mozaiek, maar is vergelijkbaar met de mengelmoes van talen en culturen die mekaar beinvloeden in het huidige Europa. Oceania. Reizen door het onmetelijke is een uitnodiging om het 5de continent te verkennen aan de hand van materiele getuigenissen die door de eeuwen heen bewaard bleven. Wij houden eraan deze overblijfselen als artistieke expressie te beschouwen. In werkelijkheid weet men weinig over de perceptie van kunst van de vroegere eilandbewoners, maar wat ze produceerden is van een onmiskenbare en fascinerende schoonheid. Maskers, wapens, architectuur, afbeeldingen van goden, voorouders of geesten? werden door de inwoners van Oceanie vervaardigd om hun wereldbeeld uit te drukken. Nous aimons classer ces vestiges dans la categorie des expressions artistiques. Au vrai, on ne sait trop la perception de l'art qu'avaient les Insulaires de jadis, mais l'esthetique de leurs productions est indeniable et fascinante. Masques, armes, architectures, figurations des dieux, des ancetres ou des esprits?, les Oceaniens concurent tout cela pour gerer leurs visions du monde et ils n'ont eu de cesse de se surpasser pour rendre ces objets efficaces et efficients?, et donc beaux, car reflets sinceres de leur histoire et de leurs identites. 0 g.
