Add to basketHard Pictorial Boards. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Thus. A splendid copy of this rather charming book. The paper covered pictorial boards are nice and bright with crisp title to the spine. On close inspection you can see a little edge wear and light bumping to the corner tips but this is barely noticeable. No inscriptions and clean pages throughout the book, albeit with some light toning and very mild foxing on the fly leaves. The dust jacket is bright, although price clipped and with some noticeable edge creasing at the top edge of the front cover and a little rubbing elsewhere. Fabulous copy in all.

SCANDINAVIAN EMBROIDERY Past and Present Edith Nielsen In the Scandinavian countries em-broidery is more than a pastime?it is a way of life. Girls start learning at the preschool age level and few ever give it up because embroidery is everywhere in daily use?clothes, household furnishings, holiday decorations, all have some touch of embroidery. This comprehensive book gives the history of Scandinavian embroidery from 1700 to the present, showing the different traditions that developed in each country. Two unique styles, Hardanger and Hedebo, are fully explained, and special attention is given to the Christmas designs which are perennially popular. In addition to general instructions, there are directions for twenty-four projects including pillows, wall hang-ings, and tablecloths. The designs are colorful and unmistakable in style. Edith Nielsen was born and grew up in Denmark. Now a U.S. citizen, she lives in Seattle, Washington. Like most Scandinavian girls, she learned needle arts at a very early age. Since coming to America she has written a number of magazine and newspaper articles on crafts and other subjects.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Translated edition. No date of publication is stated but almost certainly a first translated edition (English) which, by the style of the covers, and judging by some of the books mentioned in the publisher's ads, is circa 1935. Orange boards which are rather sun faded with black title lettering and bordering on the front and spine. Small slits in the spine cloth at the head and foot but not severe. Overall the look is a book somewhat past its best because of the lightly stained and faded cloth boards yellowing end papers and mild foxing to the page block edge and title page. There are 20 pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear. A small neat previous owner name inscription on the front fly leaf and an old price of the book is written, unfortunately in pen, on the same page. In all though, despite these flaws mentioned here for fairness and clarity, this isn't a bad copy, it's fully intact and extremely scarce.

Add to basketFirst edition. Presented by King George V to S. Lawes of the 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment at the 4th London General Hospital, Denmark Hill, on Christmas Day 1914 (inscribed to front free endpaper). Quarto. Publisher's original cream cloth with decorative titles in green to the upper board and spine. Illustrated with a photogravure frontispiece, 16 tipped-in colour plates, 1 further colour plate, and 10 black and white plates. Additional printed presentation plate to front pastedown: "King Albert's Book, with Sir Francis Trippel's Best Wishes for a Happy Xmas, a Speedy Recovery and a Victorious New Year, Xmas 1914". 188pp. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with marking and darkening to the boards. The contents with toning to the endpapers, scattered foxing, and creasing to the corners of some of the tipped-in plates, are otherwise in very good order. Inscribed in black ink to the front free endpaper: "S. Lawes. 1st Royal Berkshire. / December 25th - IH. / 4th London Genera Hospital / Denmark Hill. / Presented by His Majesty King George V" (not in the King's hand). Published in aid of the Belgium Fund, the work includes contributions from over 250 figures from the worlds of literature, art, politics, music, and science. Certainly not an uncommon book, but an evocative copy, presented by King George V to a wounded soldier on Christmas Day 1914, just five months in to the First World War.
