Paperback, 67pp. A historical play (text in Russian) concerning the story of Oliver Cromwell, written by Russian Marxist playwright Anatoly Vasilyevich Lunacharsky and illustrated by Ignaty Ignatievich Nivinsky. Some splitting to spine edges of fragile illustrated yapp covers (5cm tears at head and foot), but otherwise holding. Pages lightly toned. Some wear to edges. Internally good condition. Rare.

[Roman Elegies.] I llustrated by Nivinsky including a hand-colored etching laid in at front. Titles printed in red and black, text in German and Russian. 4to, publisher's pictorial gray cloth gilt, bevelled boards; decorative endpapers. Published in Moscow and Leningrad by Academia, 1933 limited print run of 2500 copies of which 500 have the original etching, a small number were signed. Few copies have appeared for sale. 2 auctions at Bonhams 2008 and Swanns, 2013 have auction estimates $2000-$3000 although those etchings were signed. "some cloth wear and fading, inside small tears, but generally very good, etching the same, 2 gift inscriptions, clean and tight".

This performance is by Evgeny Vakhtangov (1883-1922) Russian-Armenia actor and theatre director. The color lithographs are from Ignaty Nivinsky (1881-1933) Russian artist. First edition, text in Russian. Half-leather Binding (newly bound contemporary with the publication the front cover lithograph pasted inside the book). In good condition.

Unfortunately he died of illness without seeing the production, which he directed from his hospital bed. Costumes and decor were by Ignaty Nivinsky who was also responsable for the book, providing a cubistic design for the cover, printed in pastel shades of yellow, blue, pink and green. Von Ignaz Niwinsky, der 1921 bis 1930 Lehrer an den berühmten WChUTEMAS-Werkstätten war, stammt die gesamte Buchgestaltung inklusive der konstruktivistische Umschlaglithographie. - Der bedeutende russische Maler, Zeichner, Grafiker, Architekt und Bühnenbildner Ignatius Ignatjewitsch Nivinsky (1880-1933) arbeitete seit 1910 besonders als Monumental- und Dekorationsmaler in Moskau und entwarf auch das Mausoleum Lenins. Als Architekt arbeitete Nivinsky mit dem Jugendstil-Architekten Valentin Dubovski zusammen und entwickelte einen neuen Bautypus. Seit 1912 lebte und arbeitete er in seinem von ihm selbst entworfenen Atelier, das sich zum Treffpunkt der kulturellen Elite Moskaus entwickelte und wo Nivinsky Ausstellungen, Lesungen und Musikabende veranstaltete. In den 20er Jahren war Nivinsky Leiter der Dekorationswerkstätten des Mali-Theaters. - Umschlag mit geringen Randläsuren und etwas gebräunt, Rücken am Kapital und Fuss unauffällig restauriert, Tafelränder teils etwas braunfleckig, papierbedingt leicht gebräunt, sehr gutes Exemplar und sehr selten! First edition. - Detailed documentation on the legendary Turandot performance at the Vakhtangov Theater in Moscow. - The memorial book for the theater director Yevgeny Bagrationovich Vakhtangov (1883-1922), who died in the year of the performance, contains texts on the production, the history of the theater and Vakhtangov's artistic views as well as the text and the score of the fairy tale play. - The color lithographs show Niwinsky's expressive stage sets and figurines, the actor's portraits partly with transparent cover sheets with vignettes designed by him. The entire book design, including the cubist cover lithography, comes from Niwinsky, who later became a teacher at the famous Vchutemas school. - Cover with minor marginal defects and slightly browned, spine at the capital and foot inconspicuously restored, edges of the plates partially browned, slightly browned due to the paper, very good copy and very rare!
