Dabei wird versucht, finanzielle Beratung aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu beleuchten und die Beweggründe von Investoren zur Nutzung von Beratung herauszufinden.Diese Frage ist weniger trivial und profan, als sie vielleicht auf den ersten Blick zu sein scheint. So suggerieren mehrere Studien, dass finanzielle Beratung keine Vorteile mit sich bringt, dass diese im Gegenteil sogar nachteilig für jene sein könnte, die sie in Anspruch nehmen. Die Renditen und die risikoadjustierten Renditen von Handelskonten unter Aufsicht eines Beraters sind schlechter als die selbstverwalteter Handelskonten, was auf unterschiedliche problematische Faktoren (wie etwa das Agentenproblem) zurückzuführen ist. Andererseits bringt finanzielle Beratung auch gewisse Vorteile mit sich, wie etwa verstärkte Diversifizierung und professionellere Verhaltensweisen auf den Finanzmärkten. Diese Vorteile könnten theoretisch Gründe darstellen, warum finanzielle Beratung in Anspruch genommen wird, denn trotz der Problematiken könnten vor allem stark unterdurchschnittliche Anleger davon profitieren. Das tun sie jedoch nicht, denn vor allem ältere, erfahrenere, einkommensstärkere Investoren nutzen Berater, während diejenigen, die von den Beratern am ehesten profitieren könnten, zum Beispiel aufgrund von Selbstüberschätzung oder Unterhaltungslust keine Beratung suchen.Im Endeffekt stellt sich heraus, dass finanzielle Beratung aus rationaler finanzwirtschaftlicher Sicht schwer zu rechtfertigen ist und die stärksten Argumente für die Inanspruchnahme in subjektiveren Variablen, wie etwa den psychologischen Gründen für das menschliche Verlangen nach Beratung, zu finden sind.
