Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Revised Edition. Beacon Lights of Literature, Book Eight edited by Rudolph W. Chamberlain (1947 Hardcover without Dust Jacket) This book 8 represents the culmination of grammar school literature text series "Beacon Lights of Literature." This book was prepared without regard to the state in… which the subject was to be taught. The subject matter covered was developed to satisfy the program outlined in "An Experience Curriculum in English," the national consensus of educators regarding what and how English literature should be taught in the US schools in the 1940s. Stories are grouped into 13 sections including one section on radio broadcasting and one section on motion pictures. Each section has an additional reading lists, biographic sketches of the authors, Questions & Exercises regarding the reading, and use of footnotes for unfamiliar phrases and words. There are 73 readings with 23 full-page line illustrations. None of the illustrators are named. Only one author was noticed to have written 2 readings. xviii + 749pp + 1pp ad. Under 8" tall 8vo Hardcover has rust-colored cloth boards with black lettering & designs, but no DJ. Spine still attached, although covers worn through cloth. Front end-page through frontis has been torn out. This has left some front pages loose but laid in. Remainder of text appears complete. Table of contents heavily marked, other writing or markings in text does not affect legibility. No evidence of public ownership. Copyright 1940. Printed in U.S.A. Stated 1947 Edition. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Although the preface and introductions to each reading are in English, the body of the work is in the original French. As the authors state in the preface: " Whether the general tendencies of the Enlightenment are approved or disapproved, they are already of tremendous historic…al significance." Indeed, these works were seminal in development of the U.S.A. constitution, the French revolution, Karl Marx's philosophy and all subsequent efforts to develop multi-national government. The major revisions in this 2nd edition are after p 263 and with the inclusion of a Bibliograohy . Otis Edward Fellows (1909-1993) was a scholar of 18th-century French literature. He taught in the humanities for almost forty years at Columbia University. Fellows co-edited this widely used anthology of 18th-century French literature entitled The Age of Enlightenment with Norman L. Torrey, his colleague at Columbia. Hans Alexander Mueller (1888-1963) was one of several prominent masters of woodcut and wood-engraving born in Germany who emigrated to the United States in the 1930s. He settled in Scarsdale, New York, where he worked as a freelance book illustrator and artist. Hardcover has forest green leatherette boards with silver lettering, but no DJ. Minor nicks, but square corners show this copy was valued. Prior owner's name on ffep adds no value. Book has been studied, extensive underlining throughout, some pages dog-eared. Binding tight and pages clean. Copyright renewed 1970, this version 1971. Printed in U.S.A. According to print-line, this copy is from the 4th impression of this 2nd edition. Because of the LCCN, suspect this copy printed in or after 1973. ISBN-10: 0-13-018465-9. LCCN: 73-147121. Bookstore ink stamp on ffep suggests this copy sold new for $27.50. Due to size and weight, additional shipping will be required for expedited or international orders. Sharp, Gene (Sketch-maps) ;Norton, Boyd (Photos not otherwise attributed) (illustrator). Trade Paperback. Condition: Good+. Reprint. Backroads of Colorado by Boyd & Barbara Norton (1986 Trade Paperback) This is your complete guide to the most scenic backroads of Colorado: the secret routes and highways that lead you through the state's most beautiful mountain ranges, alpine wildflower meadows, river valleys, ghost t…owns, aspen forests, and more. Let Boyd and Barbara Norton enhance your Colorado tour with their personal and colorful tales. They provide detailed directions for each of the over 40 backroad adventures, along with descriptions of the surrounding area, its history, and interesting points of discovery along the way. All the routes described in Backroads of Colorado were accessible by car. The authors also discuss which roads are suitable for mobile-home RVs and off-road four-wheel drive vehicles. A bibliography is supplied. Photos not attributed to others were taken by Boyd Norton. Sketch-maps were drawn by Gene Sharp, based on maps prepared by Paul Tiddens. Oversized trade paperback has complete covers with a chip lost from spine along foot of spine stabilized with tape. The prior owners clipped a few newspaper accounts of out-of-the-way sites of interest in Southern Colorado that were laid in the book and part of this offer. Original MSR was overwritten with ink to hide price. No ownership markings, nor notes in text to modify the routes as laid out in the 1970s. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Fraying and rubbing along edges of boards, with some minor losses to marbled paper on front board. Minor patch repair (approx 1cm square) to spine. Moderate staining to main title pag…e. Hinges cracking at main title page, but all pages are secure, being very tight elsewhere. Some mild staining to last few index pages and rear end papers. A very scarce item. I can find no other copies of this age. Later editions were split into two volumes each comprising of approximately 280 pages. This edition comprises of 795 pages, including indexes. There is a large fold-out black and white map at the front of the book, measuring approximately 50cm x 40cm. There are two closed tears on the map edges, one of approx 9cm near to the hinge and the other of approx 2cm along the bottom edge. The map was engraved by J Menzies, apparently for 'The Topography of Scotland'. The publisher, John Thomson Junior, was a cartographer of note and a publisher of his own maps and books, suggesting that the book was written by Thomson himself. Thomson later produced many books of maps of the world and of Scotland. A preface in the book is dated 1st August 1805, and refers to no other previous editions, reinforcing my belief that this is a genuine first edition. The preface refers to 12 smaller maps within the book, of counties. These twelve black and white maps are all present (in later editions these maps were hand coloured). The book measure 18 cms x 11 1/2 cms. Not attributed but believed to be John Thomson Junior (illustrator).
