Published by On May 25, 1921, the Indianapolis Times reported that LeRoy was struck and killed by a train. The train accident actually occurred in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Eugene LeRoy had been living as a fugitive under the alias "George King" (or George Leroy according to other accounts). On Friday night, May 20, 1921, he was struck and killed by a Rock Island Railroad freight train. Following the accident, Shawnee Chief of Police Ira Sims processed the body. Local officers noticed his physical features and scars identically matched the active Detroit Police Department bulletins., Detroit, Michigan, 1920

[Transcription:] "Detroit Police Department Wanted for Murder Eugene LeRoy, alias O. J. Fernandez alias Oscar J. Wood $1000 Reward [Left and Right] EUGENE LEROY, alias O. J. FERNANDE…Z, alias OSCAR J. WOOD. On the 9th day of June, 1920, this man killed his wife, Katherine LeRoy, in their apartment at No. 105 Harper Ave., this city. He put her body in a trunk and shipped it via American Express to New York City, where the body was discovered in the storage house of that company on 44th St. on July 23, 1920. DESCRIPTION OF LEROY, ALIAS FERNANDEZ, ALIAS WOOD Age 24 years, 5 feet 10 inches, 155 lbs., medium dark complexion, jet black hair, long and combed back, and has the appearance of being oily or wet, dark eyes, long nose, has scar on calf of leg, has the appearance of a Jew, is a neat dresser, and claims to be a boxer, has been employed as a draftsman and tool maker, is a good mechanic, supposed to be of Spanish or Mexican descent. This man has relatives living in San Antonio, Texas, and is well known in the cities near the Mexican border. He was arrested in New York City on July 18, 1919, under the name of Oscar J. Wood, on a charge of Grand Larceny. The following is a copy of his finger prints taken at that time: [Fingerprint charts shown below description] The above reward will be paid by the Auditors of Wayne County, Michigan, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the above named man. Address all letters and wires to WM. P. RUTLEDGE, Superintendent of Police. Circular No. 197 August 2, 1920." [Handwritten in dark fountain pen in on the right margin are the Police Filing Numbers:] O.C.C. 7329/21 [Handwritten in pencil across bottom margin:] 17/25, MM 10, 12 LeRoy murdered his wife, Katherine inside their Detroit home. Contemporary newspapers established that the woman was Katherine (Katharine) Jackson Leroy. A few articles identified her maiden name as Katherine Lou Fondren of Mississippi. He packed her body into a shipping trunk and sent it across state lines via the American Express Company. The trunk sat unclaimed in a New York City warehouse at Grand Central Terminal until its foul odor prompted workers to open it on July 23, 1920. The case captivated nationwide media as the famous "Trunk Murder Mystery." Detectives tracked his flight from Detroit to New York, and eventually, they thought, to South America where American authorities requested his extradition. Newspapers recorded, erroneously, that on August 21, 1920, LeRoy was arrested by maritime police in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that he had fled New York on August 3 aboard a British freighter called the Dryden, working as a member of the crew. The fellow, Morris Fox, was in fact a lookalike, one of man false leads. N.Y. Times: "When the British steamer Dryden arrived here yesterday from New York one of the crew was placed under arrest" In the era before fingerprint databases could be shared instantly across oceans, police across the country arrested multiple lookalikes. The pencil and ink markings are significant evidence of its authentic use by law enforcement agents tracking a moving target: The Police Filing Numbers (O.C.C. 7329/21) written in dark fountain pen ink on the right margin, is a formal internal filing or case cross-reference code. The /21 strongly suggests a police archivist log entry from 1921, tracking the document during the ongoing prosecution or extradition timeline. The numbers written in pencil across the bottom margin (17/25, MM 10, 12) represent Henry Fingerprint Classification system formulas. When a suspect was processed, desk detectives analyzed the whorls, loops, and arches of the fingerprint charts shown on the poster. They calculated these exact numeric fractions to cross-reference the suspect's prints against physical index card files in local and federal criminal databases. These handwritten ma.
