Die Papiere sollten als Außen- oder Innenbezüge bei sog. "Luxuskartonagen" (s. Pieske, ABC des Luxuspapiers, S. 177ff.) dienen. Sie wurden besonders für Schmuckschachteln von höherwertigen Süßwaren, Modebedarf etc. verwendet. Alle Muster sind im Druck mit einer "Dessin"-Nummer versehen. Bei den meisten der kleinerformatigen Blätter sind die Motive von geprägten, in schönstem Jugendstil gehaltenen Rahmen eingefasst. Bevorzugte Motive sind Blumenbuketts, stillebenartige Darstellungen, Katzen (meist Milch leckend), romantische Landschaften und natürlich für den Höhepunkt der Verkaufssaison: Weihnachtliches. Zwei Muster zeigen den Reichsadler mit kleinen Kokarden in den Reichsfarben. Der unregelmäßig beschnittene Karton konnte zu einer hohen, schmalen Schachtel zusammenfaltet werden und diente vermutlich zur Aufnahme von Süßigkeiten, die anlässlich eines nationalen Festtags (Kaisers Geburtstag, Sedanstag) verschenkt wurden. - Die Firma Gebrüder Opbacher wurde 1869 gegründet und bestand unter wechselnden Namen bis 1988. Sie druckte u.a. auch Plakate und, besonders seit dem 2. Weltkrieg, illustrierte Kinderbücher. Ein vor einigen Jahren versteigertes, wohl vollständiges Exemplar der vorliegenden Mustermappe hatte 139 eingeklebte Muster. Demnach fehlen hier knapp 20 Bildmuster. Der Versuch einzelne Blätter von den Trägerblättern abzulösen hat zu starken (Ausrisse) Beschädigungen bei 10 Motiven geführt. 37 Motive wurden am Blattrand zusammen mit dem Karton ausgeschnitten. Der Band ist in Einzelblätter aufgelöst.
