Boards in slip-case. Introd. Peter Campbell (illustrator). 1st thus. Original quarter-cloth with illustrated upper board, colour plates, notes, bibliography, index, pp xxvi, 409. Near fine condition in like slipcase. Patrick O'Brian's comprehensive biography of Joseph Banks (1743-1820) the naturalist and botanist, who sailed with Cook on the Endeavour to the South Pacific. "That Patrick O'Brian would write a good book about the early life of Josph Banks was to be expected. Banks combined the enthusiasm and practical competence of one of O'Brian's fictional heroes, Jack Aubrey, with the passion for natural history of another, Stephen Maturin." (Peter Campbell, Introduction, p. xv).
