Die 1866 datierte Zeichnung ist während des Aufenthaltes in Karlsruhe entstanden, wo er seit 1866 in der Nowackanlage 8 wohnte. Der Berliner Maler studierte 1859-1862 an der Berliner Akademie unter A. von Klöber (1793-1864), 18…62-1864 an der Karlsruher Akademie bei J.W. Schirmer (1807-1863) und L. Des Coudres (1820-1878). In dieser Zeit schloß er sich eng an seinen Schwiegervater A. Schrödter (1805-1875) an. Aufenthalte in Paris 1867 und in Rom 1868/69 folgten. 1870/71 war er während des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges Maler im deutschen Hauptquartier. Seit 1871 war er in Berlin ansässig, wo er 1875 zum Direktor der Akademie ernannt wurde. 1887-1895 war er Vorsitzender des Vereins Berliner Künstler.
