This book presents a large collection of primary source material exploring the reign of the English King Henry VIII and his successors, focusing on the activities of the Order of the Garter, a chivalric institution dating back to the 14th century. They document not only the administrative and ceremonial business of the Order, but also contain a wealth of information on the political and economic history of England and continental Europe. In his editorial work, the author has endeavoured to provide a comprehensive and accurate selection of documents giving a broad overview of the Garterâs history during the Tudor period, the interactions between the English monarchy, the aristocracy and the wider world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate political landscape of 17th-century Europe, offering a glimpse into the diplomatic relations between England, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire. The author meticulously curates a collection of letters and papers from key figures of the era, including ambassadors, secretaries of state, and religious leaders, to paint a vivid picture of the power struggles, alliances, and conflicts that shaped the continent. The Thirty Years' War serves as a backdrop to the unfolding events, with the book exploring the complex negotiations surrounding the Palatinate's restitution and the delicate balance of power between Catholic and Protestant forces. Readers will encounter a cast of historical characters, such as King Philip IV of Spain, the Conde-Duque de Olivares, Emperor Ferdinand II, and the Prince Palatine, as they navigate the treacherous waters of European politics. Thematic threads woven throughout the book include the role of religion in international relations, the economic and strategic considerations that motivated alliances, and the impact of war on the lives of ordinary people. The author's insightful analysis sheds light on the motivations and strategies of the key players, revealing the complex web of interests and ambitions that drove their actions. By delving into the historical context and thematic depth of these documents, the book provides a nuanced understanding of a pivotal period in European history, highlighting the enduring relevance of diplomacy, power, and religious conflict in shaping the course of nations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
