Offered in the full volume of viii, 597, (ii)pp. Also with Fizeau and Foucault, "Untersuchung ueber die Intensitat des beirn Davy'schen Versuche von der Kohle ausgesandten Lichts", pp 463-476 (originally in Annales de Chemie et de Physique, III, vol XI, p 370, AND in the Comptes Rendus , 1844, 18:746754:("RECHERCHES SUR L'INTENSITÉ DE LA LUMIÈRE ÉMISE PAR LE CHARBON DANS L'EXPÉRIENCE DE DAVY ; PAR MM. FIZEAU ET L, FOUCAULT"/"RESEARCH ON THE INTENSITY OF LIGHT EMITTED BY Carbon IN DAVY'S EXPERIMENT; BY MM. FIZEAU AND L, FOUCAULT.") [++]  Black cloth-backed marbled boards with cloth tips. Formerly from the library of the Deutsche Akademie der Luftfahtforschung; and on the USAAF library at Wright Patterson, and finally to the Library of Congress.  Few interior stamps, plus "Wright Field Library" rubber stamped on the text block's top and bottom.  That all said, a very nice copy. "From 1844 Fizeau and Foucault undertook a series of precise and mechanically ingenious optical experiments that would ultimately have a profound effect on the course of physics. "--Encyclopedia Britannica online. [++] "Once Daguerre's pension was secured and the secret of his process announced to the world, Arago set about turning the daguerreotype into a photometer. As he rarely did much observing himself anymore, he enlisted two young daguerreotypists, Hippolyte Fizeau and Le´on Foucault, to conduct the experiments for him.37 The two men, both school dropouts who seemed to have a knack for working with their hands, were very different from the well-trained savants Biot hoped would serve as the gatekeepers to the mysterious world of the photographic image. Their strategies for investing the photograph with reliability were equally different. The photometric work of Fizeau and Foucault was patterned on a set of experiments Arago had performed in the 1830s; but where he had used a visual photometer, they substituted silver plates. They were very explicit about their choice of the "daguerrian surface" over the other materials available: in the original manuscript Fizeau cited the "sharpness [nettete´] and visibility of the effect produced" as the deciding factor.38 Since they were using the plates to compare luminous sources, they wanted the process to be as much like visual observation as possible. They proceeded by forming an image of the luminous source in a chambre obscure. In this case, however, the term "chambre obscure" refers to a movable device that could be directed toward the object in question; it contained a lens that would form a geometrically precise representation." See: Theresa Levitt "Biot's Paper and Arago's Plates: Photographic Practice and the Transparency of Representation" Isis Vol. 94, No. 3 (September 2003), pp. 456-476. [+From the F & F paper: "We know with what facility we can now repeat the experiment of the incandescence of carbon by the pile, by means of the powerful instrument which Mr. Bunsen has recently placed in the hands of physicists; therefore it seemed possible to us to try some experiments in order to compare this light source with other sources most remarkable by their intensity. We have chosen for this comparison the sunlight and the light produced by the lime placed in the flame of the oxygen and hydrogen gas torch. Since our aim was not to compare the quantities of light shed by these different sources, but to compare their very intensities, the choice of the photometric process became difficult; we therefore thought of using the chemical properties of light. This application of photographic processes, indicated several years ago by M. Arago, has not yet been attempted, which obliges us to explain in a few words the principles on which we have relied." Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon.
