Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The essays in this book examine various manifestations of monstrosity in the early literatures of England, Ireland and Scandinavia. The dates of the texts discussed range from the eight to the thirteenth centuries and were written either in Latin or in one of the vernaculars. The present contributions shed light on the physical, mental and metaphysical qualities that characterise medieval monsters in general. How do such creatures relate to accepted physical norms? How do their behaviours deviate from established cultural practices? How can their presence in both fictional and non-fictional texts be explained either in terms of a textual tradition or as a response to actual events? Such issues are examined from literary, philosophical, theological and historical points of view in order to provide a thorough, multifaceted depiction of the sub- and supernatural monsters of medieval Northwest Europe. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Travel has always been a favourite human concern. Throughout the centuries, fascination with the unfamiliar or even unknown has turned many people into geographers, explorers, and writers of travel fiction. In the early Middle Ages, a great variety of travel accounts were accordingly appropriated, translated, recontextualised, and ultimately found their way into the literary production of Germanic Europe. The interest in distant countries and peoples was complemented by spiritual concerns, such as one finds in the accounts of early pilgrims to the Holy Land. The key words in the title of this book, 'exploration and imagination', imply that travel meant more than visiting foreign places and peoples. As with modern fantasy and science fiction literature, travel could also stimulate the imagination, especially in cases when perilous physical journeys were enhanced by imagined travel. Such accounts were rich in descriptions of the physical world, but they lent themselves equally to the relation of spiritual journeys. As a result, modern out-of-body experience finds its medieval counterpart in the journeyings and adventures of the human soul within a metaphysical and eschatological perspective. Finally, imagery travel may also be purely intellectual. The articles in this volume address the categories of travel outlined above in the light of the interface between the Latin and Germanic traditions. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Dedicated to the miraculous side of the Germania Latina nexus, the essays in this collection treat cultural appropriation in saints' lives and other religious texts derived from Latin traditions and transmitted through medieval Germanic vernaculars. Miracle stories were appealing narratives which travelled well but were usually adapted for their new audiences to reflect localised interests. Approaching this recontextualisation from historical, theological and literary points of view, the contributions pay particular attention to the way the miraculous is retained and refashioned in Latin texts and vernacular redactions from Anglo-Saxon England, Iceland and the Continent.
