Léon Pierre Blouet was a French author and journalist, and this is his account of travel through the United States in which he compares the differences between the American and French societies. The book is illustrated by E W Kemble, perhaps best known for his illustrations to Twain's Huckleberry Finn. Condition: A good copy. There is some grubbiness and marking to the covers, and one gathering is starting to loosen but the book remaining in strong readable condition. Cloth. Condition: Very Good. A charming edition of this travel work by Max O'Rell, copiously illustrated with 'upwards of 130 illustrations' by E.W. Kemble. Max O'Rell, the pseudonym of Leon Paul Blouet, was a French author and journalist best known for his works which provided observations and comparisons of Anglo-American and French culture. This text details the incredibly successful author's lecturing tour around the United States, where he was considered the bestselling foreign lecturer of his time. Edward Windsor Kemble, usually cited as E. W. Kemble, was an American illustrator best known for illustrating the first edition of Mark Twain's 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn'. Kemble, born in Sacramento, California, demonstrated an early artistic talent, becoming a successful contributor to periodicals by 1881 at the age of twenty. Impressed by his youth and considerable talent, the 'New York Daily Graphic' offered him the position as the major political cartoonist for the paper, whilst Kemble receiving his only formal artistic training at the Art Students League of New York. This position quickly led Kemble to contribute to other major publications, such as 'Life magazine', 'Collier's', 'Harper's Weekly' and 'Leslie's Weekly'. It was these lively cartoons, some of the magazine industry's most mature work, that attracted the attention of Mark Twain, who employed Kemble for his most well-known work; the illustrations for 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn'. This copy features a publisher's advertisement to the front pastedown, as well as three further advertisements to the rear of the text. In a brown cloth binding. ONE: Cabinet Card: 13.5 x 10 cm photographic head-and-shoulders portrait of Blouet, smartly-dressed with glasses and handlebar moustache, mounted on 16.5 x 10.5 cm card, with printed details of the photographers Taber's printed in gold below the image, and an elaborate advertisement for the firm printed in brown on the reverse. In fair condition, lightly aged. Inscribed on the base of the print: 'Yours Sincerely | Max O'Rell'. TWO: Autograph Letter Signed to 'Mr Appleton', i.e. E. W. Appleton. 1p, 12mo. On bifolium. 14 December 1885; 2 Lime Grove, Uxbridge Road, W. [London] In fair condition, aged and worn, with central spike hole. He is enclosing a cheque for £3 9s 6d, 'which I believe you will find correct to amount of fees received of me.' In a postscript he asks him, on acknowledging receipt of the cheque, to 'please say if I can see you on Wednesday, at Clifford's Inn, at about 2 p.m. | M. O'R.' The Woodson Research Centre, Rice University, Houston, has a collection of Blouet's letters to Appleton, who acted as agent for his lectures (see J. Verhoeven, 'Jovial Bigotry: Max O'Rell and the Transnational Debate over Manners and Morals in 19th Century France, Britain and the United States', 2012).…
