Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

""The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam" provoked a fierce reaction from the moment of the publication of its earlier sections in 1773. Personalities as divergent as George III and Horace Walpole found its assertively self-confident tone intolerable, but however hostile this initial reception may have been, the importance of the first volume, issued in complete form in 1778, soon became apparent to all unbiased observers. A second volume appeared in 1779, followed by a third, posthumous one in 1822. "The Works" set out clearly Robert and James Adam's aesthetic credo and stake their claim to having affected a revolution in the decorative arts of the late eighteenth century. First published after the completion of several staggeringly influential projects for English country houses, these volumes were at once a stunning summation of the Adam mode and a brilliant advertising ploy, designed to affirm the originality of the brothers's (sic) innovations against the initiative schemes of Wyatt and Chippendale. Following the tradition of the great Renaissance and Baroque architects, the Adam brothers codified their style and made their rich vocabulary of decoration available to designers in England and on the continent. Indeed, the publication of "The Works" gave a massive impetus to the Anglomania which swept French artistic circles at the time. Like many great modes of design, the Adam style was fundamentally eclectic ,drawing most heavily for inspiration upon the antique while borrowing also from the cinquecento and the French Rococo. Diverging from the sobriety of continental Neo-Classicism, Robert and James Adam reacted against the heavy Palladianism of their immediate English predecessors and developed an increasingly refined, elegant and even delicate translation of Greek and Roman forms which was unique and totally original. Their vision permeated every aspect of their designs, from the shape of the rooms to the smallest detail of ormolu beading, and the Adam mode became as integral a part of late eighteenth century style as the Reynolds portrait. Robert Oresko, who researches primarily in the fields of seventeenth and eighteenth century architecture, has produced the first complete edition of both the text and the engravings of "The Works" to appear for over seventy years. To this he added an introductory essay, bibliography, indexes of buildings and engravers and over forty-five photographs which illustrate the lasting achievement of the Adam brothers. This long overdue reappearance of the complete "Works" provides the scholar, the connoisseur and the layman with both an invaluable document of eighteenth century architectural and decorative thought and the essential primary material for understanding "the Adam revolution" in design.".

Paperback. Condition: Gut. XXI., 671 p., 97 plates, 10 figures. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - very good condition - This substantial collection of specially commissioned chapters addresses the theme of sovereignty and the sources and variety of political power in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe, from Russia to Spain and from the Italian peninsula to the Dutch Republic. -- A unifying theme, taken up in a substantial editorial introduction, is the determination to move away from clichés such as the rise of the modern state. Instead, emphasis is placed upon the composite nature of early modern political structures and upon the significant number of bodies and individuals who were recognised as possessing, or who exercised, sovereignty. One particularly notable and novel feature is the-attention paid to the potential of visual material for this subject: many of the chapters are accompanied by striking^pd often little-known illustrations. Topics are as diverse as international relations and the control of foreign policy, the cultural policies and political ambitions of representational monarchy, urban developments, and the personalities of those who exercised authority. These diverse themes were all illuminated by the writings of Professor Ragnhild Hatton (1913-^95), to whose memory this collection is dedicated. -- Republicanism, monarchism and liberty -- H. G.
