Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. [Darwin, Charles] First Mention of the "On the Origin of Species" in the journal Comptes Rendus de l'Academie des Sciences, Paris, vol 50, #$10, 16 April 1860, in the issue of pp 739-766 with the tiny entry for Darwin as the last line on page 764. This is extracted from a larger bound volume and comes with the original wrappers, though these are detached. GOOD condition. Let me be clear that this is the first mention of Darwin and the Origin in the CRAS journal. Even though the CRAS was one of the most esteemed science journals in Europe , and was a rapid publication vehicle for breaking-news papers (being a weekly), there was a gap of 5 months between the publication of the Darwin (29 November 1859) and any sort of notice or mention of Darwin's name until this short slug appeared in the 16 April issue, and then only as a mention that the Academy was in receipt of the book. It just strikes me as a little odd, seeing how much was published elsewhere in the US and Europe in late 1859 and early 1860 (particularly with book reviews). (Book reviews being mentioned now the CRAS basically didn't publish them, though the Origin itself was hotly and coldly received around the globe in the opening weeks and months following publication. I don't know enough o speculate on the seeming silence of the French Academy and Darwin—I'm just stating a finding is all and offering it up for sale as an unusual (?) little part of Darwin's story and the reception of his great book.…
