Für den Entwurf des Terminals wählten die Architekten Meinhard von Gerkan, Volkwin Marg und Klaus Nickels die Figur eines großen Sechsecks mit 120 Metern Kantenlänge. Durch eine ausgeklügelte Erschließung entstand ein »Flughafen der kurzen Wege«, bei dem im besten Fall zwischen Auto- und Flugzeugtür nur 28 Meter liegen. Im Jahr 2020 scheint die Stilllegung des TXL tatsächlich Wirklichkeit zu werden. Der Fotograf Peter Ortner hält seinen ganz persönlichen Blick auf den Flughafenkomplex fest und fängt dessen eigentlich schon vergangenen Glanz ein: jene Details, die allen Reisenden, allen Wartenden so vertraut sind.
